Cam Ward’s tenure under Mike McCoy hit an early purple patch. Ward did not appreciate McCoy’s passive approach on a fourth down.

On Sunday, the 1-6 Tennessee Titans were massive underdogs against division and AFC leaders the Indianapolis Colts, who were 6-1 after seven weeks. The Titans had nothing to lose as they were playing mostly for pride and bragging rights.

So, it only made sense for the Titans to play without much headache. However, McCoy’s cautious approach, similar to his predecessor‘s, got on Ward’s nerves when he called for a punt on a fourth down instead of allowing him to throw the football in the third quarter.

Cameras caught an upset Ward yelling at McCoy after removing his helmet inside the Titans’ dugout.

The Titans trailed 17-7 when the Colts regained possession.

Ward has had to deal with a lot in the first half of his rookie season. Aside from losing six games, he has seen coaching and offensive coordinator changes in the space of a little over six months.

Long story short, the Titans have set up Ward for failure. It has gravely affected his performance. The Miami graduate’s release time has decreased compared to his college days, behind one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL.

There have been flashes of brilliance in pockets, but those don’t help win games. The Titans’ only win this year, against the Arizona Cardinals, happened on the back of a mistake from a Cardinals player.

The Colts are no Cardinals. Daniel Jones has revitalized the stagnated offense. He gave the Colts a fourteen-point lead in the third quarter before the Titans punted the ball away on their drive.

This blew up on the Titans’ faces. Johnny Hekker‘s punt landed in the end zone, resulting in a touchback. In the following play, running back Jonathan Taylor rushed for an 80-yard touchdown, giving the Colts a 24-7 lead.

Jones threw his second and third touchdown passes to Josh Downs for a 10-yard strike and to Taylor at the start of the fourth quarter for a 19-yard score.

The Titans reduced the gap by a minuscule margin through RB Tyjae Spears. Two minutes before the final whistle, Spears rushed for a 3-yard touchdown, improving the score to 14-38.

There were no more scores after the two-minute warning, so the final score stayed the same. The Colts improved their record to 7-1 (first time since 2009), while the Titans find themselves at 1-7.

Cam Ward finished his eighth NFL game with 22 completions from 38 tries for 259 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. Rookie Chimere Dike caught 7 passes for 93 yards while Spears rushed for 59 yards and scored 1 TD.

Across the eight starts as the Titans QB, Ward has completed 158 passes from 274 attempts (57.7%) for 1615 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. In week nine, he will go up against the Los Angeles Chargers, who are 5-3 after defeating the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday.

Ward was drafted first overall in 2025. He spent two years in the FCS with Incarnate Word before transferring to the Washington State Cougars in 2022. Two years later, he joined the Miami Hurricanes.

In 57 games, across five years of college football, Ward completed 1515 passes for 18,137 yards, 158 touchdowns, and 37 picks.
