Cameron Norrie criticises ATP for poor laws as Novak Djokovic qualifies for ATP Finals but Nick Kyrgios doesn’t

British No. 1 Cameron Norrie identified an anomaly with the rule that helped Novak Djokovic qualify for the ATP Finals in 2022 but bereft him and Nick Kyrgios of making the trip to Turin. In a conversation with the British newspaper, The Daily Mail, Norrie expressed his disappointment with current ATP ranking system and even accused it of being extremely “unfair” towards him and Nick Kyrgios.
For context, the participation of all tennis players in the Grand Slams and their performance in the tournament earn them points. The more matches a player wins, the more points he or she earns, which invariably helps in their overall rankings. However, this year Wimbledon decided not to allow Russian players to participate in the prestigious event. And that’s precisely why ATP declared not to award any points to any player for his or her performance in the tournament.
The Serb won the Wimbledon defeating the Australian in the final. The British player also played well to reach the semi-finals.
As per the British tennis player himself, Novak was able to qualify for the ATP Finals due to his Wimbledon performance but Kyrgios and he could not even though they played extremely well at the tournament.
“(Novak Djokovic) qualified from Wimbledon, so that seems a bit strange. I don’t know if that was the rule before or not, but it seems unfair,” Norrie said.
He also blamed ATP for being partial to the 21-time Grand Slam champion. Meanwhile, Nick Kyrgios’ manager Stuart Duguid also gave his opinion on the controversy.
“First and foremost, Novak deserves to be in Turin. But it feels arbitrary that he is the only player to benefit from his performances at Wimbledon,” he stated.
However, ATP has come clear on this issue and released a statement.
“The removal of ranking points at this year’s Wimbledon was done based on fairness to all players, and no further rule changes linked to the competition’s status were deemed necessary. Any player competing at Wimbledon or the other Grand Slams this year had the opportunity to qualify for Turin via the Grand Slam qualification rule,” the ATP spokesperson said.
Who will get a chance to play the ATP Finals tournament?
The ATP Finals tournament will be played in the beautiful city of Turin in Italy this year. Four players have already qualified for the prestigious tournament at the end of the year.
Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal have already qualified on the back of their splendid performances in the Grand Slams and other ATP tournaments played throughout the year. Both the Spanish and Serbian have won one Grand Slam this year while Nadal won the Australian Open and the French Open.
Daniil Medvedev also won two ATP titles and his performance at the Australian Open helped him to earn a place in the ATP Finals this year. Other contenders for the remaining four spots include Felix Auger-Aliassime, Andrey Rublev, Taylor Fritz, and Hubert Hurkacz.
With all players set to bring in their top game in the tournament, fans are extremely excited about the iconic face off between some of the most prominent tennis players. With that being said, it will be pretty interesting to see who becomes the next champion. Daniil Medvedev is the current ATP champion.
