Canada Basketball head coach Jordi Fernandez is not happy with Golden State Warriors locking down Andrew Wiggins before Olympics

With the Paris Olympics around the corner, many athletes are looking forward to representing their countries. Andrew Wiggins is one of them, as he looks forward to building on Canada Basketball’s Bronze medal finish at the FIBA World Cup last year.

However, the Golden State Warriors have prohibited their star from leaving the team’s location. Something that the head coach of Canada Basketball, Jordi Fernandez, is not happy with. All other national team players of Canada Basketball are at their training camp. Naturally, Wiggins’ absence has been felt and Fernandez was asked if it affected the team’s preparations.

I feel for him because I know he wanted to be here…. It’s a position where it’s not in our hands. We don’t like it, we respect. And we just gotta move on.
Jordi Fernandez said

The exact reasons why the Golden State Warriors have blocked Wiggins from participation is unknown. However, Jordi Fernandez, who is also the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets, respects their decision.

Two situations are developing regarding Andrew Wiggins. One is that he is potentially on the trade block. Therefore, going to a training camp means there is a risk of injury. Therefore, a team will not be willing to trade for an injured player.

Secondly, it has been long rumored that the NBA Champion has been struggling with an ankle injury for months. The Warriors may not want him to aggravate that and jeopardize their upcoming season. Wiggins was not part of Canada Basketball’s FIBA World Cup Bronze winning team.

Andrew Wiggins’s offseason could impact Warriors’ future

A couple of seasons ago, Andrew Wiggins played an important role in the Warriors winning their 4th NBA title in 9 years. His offensive production coupled with his efforts to guard the perimeter were crucial to their success. However, last season saw a dip in his performances. It was more noticeable considering how the Golden State Warriors struggled as a whole.

Going into this off-season, they face some tough choices. On one hand, they are resigned to losing their longtime 3-and-D star, Klay Thompson. On the other hand, they are cash-strapped and cannot make a move for a replacement. Wiggins’ drop in performance has led many to believe that he may be sacrificed for a better overall player.

But it all depends on how the off-season starts off. The Warriors will decide on Wiggins’ future depending on how the first few dominoes fall.
