In Short
  • The Montreal Canadiens were eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs after a 6-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5.
  • This marks the continuation of a 33-year drought for Canadian teams in winning the Stanley Cup since 1993.
  • Fans on social media trolled the Canadiens, highlighting the dominance of U.S. teams in recent hockey competitions.

The Montreal Canadiens were knocked out of the Stanley Cup playoffs on Friday. They suffered a 6-1 loss against the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5 and were eliminated from the Eastern Conference Final. Following their loss, fans on social media trolled them.

The Canadiens were the last remaining Canadian team in the playoffs this year. Apart from the Ottawa Senators and the Edmonton Oilers, they were one of the 3 teams from Canada in the playoffs.

The Senators ended up facing the Hurricanes in the first round. The Canes proved too strong for them as they got swept 4-0. For the Oilers, it was a much bigger setback.

The Edmonton-based side had lost the previous two Stanley Cup Final (both against the Florida Panthers). This year, the Connor McDavid‘s side also faced early elimination as they lost 4-2 against the Anaheim Ducks in the first round.

The Canadiens were thus Canada’s last hope of bringing the Cup back. Since their triumph in 1993, no Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup.

There have been 8 instances since 1993 in which a Canadian team has reached the Final. However, they have lost all 8 of them. Check the list below about the Canadian team’s performance in the Stanley Cup Final since 1993:

  • 1994: Vancouver Canucks lose 4-3 against New York Rangers
  • 2004: Calgary Flames lose 4-3 against Tampa Bay Lightning
  • 2006: Edmonton Oilers lose 4-3 against Carolina Hurricanes
  • 2007: Ottawa Senators lose 4-1 against Anaheim Ducks
  • 2011: Vancouver Canucks lose 4-3 against Boston Bruins
  • 2021: Montreal Canadiens lose 4-1 against Tampa Bay Lightning
  • 2024: Edmonton Oilers lose 4-3 against Florida Panthers
  • 2025: Edmonton Oilers lose 4-2 against Florida Panthers

With their loss on Friday, the streak stretches up to 33 years now. Canada, whose national winter sport is ice hockey, has not seen any of its team bring home the trophy in over 3 decades now.

The Canadiens went 48-24-10 in the 2025-26 season and finished with 106 points. They finished 3rd in the Atlantic Division and took on the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round.

After overcoming them 4-3, they faced off against a Buffalo Sabres side that had ended a long playoff drought. They defeated them 4-3 as well to reach the Eastern Conference Final.

The Habs had a strong start to the series and won 6-2 in Game 1. This turned out to be the Hurricanes’ first loss in the playoffs this year, as they had swept the Senators and the Philadelphia Flyers in the first two rounds.

The Canes then won Games 2 and 3 in overtime. In both games, they edged out the Canadiens 3-2. A 4-0 victory in Game 4 was followed by a 6-1 thumping in Game 5. The Canadiens were outscored 18-11 in this series.

Fans on social media, however, did not let this chance go by. On X, many users trolled the Montreal-based side and even took shots at Canada. One user wrote, “United States keeps on winning” referring to the recent dominance of America in hockey over their neighbors.

Check out that and some other reactions from X below:

Earlier this year, the United States defeated Canada in both women’s and men’s ice hockey gold medal matches at the Winter Olympics. Both games were won in overtime as Megan Kelly and Jack Hughes scored golden goals to bring ice hockey glory back to the States.

Canadiens’ Lane Hutson admits Hurricanes were better than them

It was not meant for the Montreal Canadiens this season. After some tough battles against the Lightning and the Sabres, they were torn apart by the Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Final. Lane Hutson admitted that their opponents were better than them.

While speaking with the reporters, the 22-year-old expressed that he was not sure why his team was unable to bring their best game against the Canes in this series.

They played really well too, but not really sure why we couldn’t bring better. But, I mean, we’re still far off and we know it.

Lane Hutson said

The Canadiens had worked hard to reach the conference final. They won 2-1 in Game 7 against the Lightning and then took down the Sabres 3-2 in overtime in Game 7. With two long series, the Canadiens’ tank finally ran out empty in the series against the high-flying Canes.

The Hurricanes will now take on the Vegas Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup Final. The Golden Knights swept the Colorado Avalanche 4-0. Both these teams will play in their 3rd final, having won one and lost one in their previous two trips.
