According to Oscar de La Hoya, the loss suffered by his fighter, Jaime Munguia, to Canelo Alvarez on Saturday will set the young boxer up for success in the future. Furthermore, he also compared the loss to Alvarez’s defeat against Floyd Mayweather. On Cinco De Mayo, Munguia fought for the super-middleweight titles against Alvarez. Saul, the more experienced of the two, came into the fight after a unanimous decision over Jermell Charlo. Munguia, meanwhile, was unbeaten and had won his most recent fight by TKO over John Ryder.

Alvarez also fought Ryder on May 6, 2023, and won via unanimous decision. Hence, after Munguia’s stellar performance against the same opponent, he was deemed a worthy contender against the undisputed champion. However, on fight night, Alvarez showed the world why he is known as the face of boxing by dismantling his young opponent. Subsequently, De La Hoya predicted great things for Munguia after the loss.

It's just like Mayweather and Canelo, same thing. Canelo got schooled, and then he became the face of boxing.

Alvarez fought against Mayweather back in 2013, as Money delivered a masterclass against him. After suffering his first professional loss, Saul managed to learn a lot from his mistakes. In addition, he went on to become the face of boxing and had an illustrious career in the sport.

De La Hoya firmly believes that Munguia is in a similar situation and states that the young fighter will grow from his loss. Even Alvarez complimented his opponent for his bravery and tenacity and stated how he could achieve great things in the future.

Oscar De La Hoya defends Ryan Garcia

De La Hoya also addressed the controversy surrounding Ryan Garcia and his failed drug test after the Alvarez vs. Munguia fight. VADA has claimed that KingRy’s test indicated that he had used the banned substance Ostarine before the Devin Haney fight.

Ostarine is a steroid that is used by athletes for muscle building. As such, this has become a serious issue, which has caused Ryan Garcia to be investigated by the New York Commission. Subsequently, his promoter stated that he believed that his fighter did not cheat.

In addition, Oscar De La Hoya confirmed that they will be submitting a B sample to VADA and issuing a statement. If Garcia is proven guilty, his victory over Haney will become a no-contest. This would mean that The Dream will remain undefeated.
