As far as being an impetus for my stepping away, I’ll go right back to what I said when I did, and I said it clearly, but maybe not clearly enough: I just needed time. I woke up and I realized, at the end of my career, I’m not spending time doing anything other than racing…It’s really a risky sport. I escaped without any lasting injuries.

Carl Edwards insists the 2016 finish wasn’t the reason for his exit

The fans of the Hall of Famer has long been believing that he decided to retire because of the unfair caution call and the wreck cot him the title. But Edwards while talking about it point out that he didn’t make the call because how his championship run came to an end.

I would just like to say that I officially respect the way NASCAR runs the sport in the way they need to run it. I don’t want to say anything negative. I may have been unclear, and I want to be explicit, that I did not leave the sport because of the way 2016 ended. Period
Carl Edwards said.

The result of the championship run should Definity have had played a role in the ex-JGR driver’s decision, but it wasn’t the primary factor behind it. It would have given him an opportunity to think about his future at the age of 37 and he made the call to retire once he explored all other factors.
