In Carlos Alcaraz‘s new Netflix documentary, Carlos Alcaraz: My Way, the Spaniard revealed that he went to Ibiza against the wishes of his team members, including coach Juan Carlos Ferrero. Alcaraz, upset after his semifinal defeat to Novak Djokovic at the 2024 French Open, partied on the Mediterranean Island for three days.
After his off days, he lifted the Queen’s Club Championships and took his revenge on the Serb by beating him in an epic Wimbledon final. In the documentary, Ferrero appeared to be questioning Alcaraz’s commitment to tennis.
But his protege, who wants to be the best player, doesn’t want to sacrifice his happiness to accomplish incredible feats. His biggest fear is to see tennis as an obligation and become a ‘slave’ to the sport.
Alcaraz is in Rome to bid for his third title of the season. Ahead of his opening-round match against Dusan Lajovic, the 22-year-old made his feelings known on the debates he has with his coach and explained why it’s important to have different opinions.
We all have that conversations about everything: about the tournaments, the practices, the things that I want to do that I probably don’t have to. Whoever says they don’t have it, they lie. I think that’s the beauty, you know, having mixed feelings, mixed point of view. At the end, we go in the same path. We go all together. So I think that’s beautiful, as well.
Carlos Alcaraz said at the press conference
In the documentary, Alcaraz said he wants free time and that he enjoys spending time at home, but being on the move for 11 months doesn’t allow him to do that. Alcaraz, in that press conference, said he tries not to pay heed to the criticism he receives about his work ethic.
Carlos Alcaraz can’t wait to start his Italian Open campaign
Carlos Alcaraz missed the Madrid Open because of a hamstring injury he suffered during the Barcelona Open final against Holger Rune. When asked at the press conference about that injury, Alcaraz reassured that he is no longer dealing with any niggles, that he’s 100 percent fit to chase his first title in the Italian capital.

I’m ready and I’m looking forward to coming back. My level is at its best. I’m 100% ready to start the tournament. Obviously, the first round of every tournament is never easy; you have to get used to the conditions, the tournament, the court, everything.

Before the Barcelona Open, Alcaraz lifted his career’s first Monte Carlo Masters title by beating Lorenzo Musetti in three sets. This season, Alcaraz, since losing the Australian Open quarterfinal to Novak Djokovic, lifted the Rotterdam Open and then went on to lose three tournaments without reaching the final, including at Indian Wells and the Miami Open. Also for the first time since 2021, he entered the clay swing without winning a title in the Sunshine Double events.
Carlos Alcaraz is projected to meet Jannik Sinner in Italian Open final
Alcaraz has lifted nine clay-court titles, including the 2024 French Open. But at the Italian Open, he has not yet reached the final.

In the ongoing tournament, he could run into Jack Draper in the quarterfinals, defending champion Alexander Zverev in the semifinals, and Jannik Sinner in the final. Against the World No.1, he edges in the head-to-head record 6-4 and also won the last three official matches they played against each other last year, including in the semifinal of the French Open.
The three-time Grand Slam champion too hasn’t yet emerged victorious in his home tournament. Last year he skipped the third clay-court Masters 1000 of the season because of an injury.
