Carlos Alcaraz complained about the tennis schedule during the US Open, and so he was advised to skip exhibition events. He was hit with a reality check after injuring his wrist at the Barcelona Open and was forced to sit out on the sidelines for four months.
And this is why he wants to take long breaks in the future to avoid any possible injuries due to the packed schedule. But he was one of the first players to sign up for the Laver Cup. It will be his second tournament since recovering from that injury. He was last seen in action in the quarterfinals of the US Open, where he lost a five-set marathon to eventual runner-up Ben Shelton.
Alcaraz competed as the defending champion, but he did not set high expectations as he only wanted to check how he performs in the aftermath of his recovery. The seven-time Grand Slam champion will be playing in the Laver Cup for the third time in his career after making his debut in 2024, helping Team Europe win the tournament.
But last year, they failed to defend their title, with Team World clinching the win 15-9. Alcaraz lost his singles match to Taylor Fritz, which also marked the first time he registered a defeat at the hands of the American ace.
Fans give mixed reactions to Carlos Alcaraz’s Laver Cup outfit
The Laver Cup is set to start on September 25 and will conclude on September 27 at the O2 Arena in London. Ahead of the tournament, players from both Team Europe and Team World, along with their respective captains, Yannick Noah and Andre Agassi, dressed up in classic beige suits for the traditional photoshoot.

The player who attracted the most attention for his style was Carlos Alcaraz. But this time, his choice of outfit left fans completely shocked as he opted for a beige “baggy” suit with a white shirt underneath it.

Last year, Alcaraz played four matches: two doubles and two singles. He will play his first match alongside Jakub Mensik against the pair of Taylor Fritz and Alexander Bublik.
Carlos Alcaraz on why he loves playing the Laver Cup
Tennis is typically played as an individual sport, while the Laver Cup is a team event, which is why Alcaraz loves competing in the tournament. He likes to play alongside the best players in the world.

That’s why this event is unique because I’m usually fighting [on my own] during the whole year, and then having them as a coaches, it’s great. I always say that you can see the matches and the tennis much better from outside. So when they approach me and tell me some things, I will try to try to obey and do whatever.
Carlos Alcaraz said at the press conference
Of all these players, Alcaraz has achieved the most in singles, but he doesn’t consider himself a leader at all.
In every team, there has to be a leader. But I think in this team there is no leader… Why are you laughing? Why are you laughing? I am serious [Casper Ruud was laughing hearing Alcaraz’s answer]. Everybody is one of the best players in the world, so we all have to go in the same way. We try to help each other in the best way we can. I don’t see myself as a leader, not only in this competition but in any of them.
Carlos Alcaraz added
"why you laughing? 🤨"

After the Laver Cup, Alcaraz will be competing at the Japan Open, an ATP 500 event in Tokyo. He defeated Fritz in the final last year.
