Carlos Alcaraz made a strong start to his Australian Open 2025 campaign. The Spaniard defeated Alexander Shevchenko in straight sets in the first round of the tournament. While Alcaraz experienced a dip in the second set, he quickly regained his composure to secure the victory with a score of 6-1, 7-5, 6-1.
Following the match, Alcaraz appeared on a brief on-court interview speaking to former Australian tennis player John Millman. In this interview, Millman playfully brought up Alcarazās fondness for golf and inquired about whether he has played golf with Rafael Nadal.
Alcaraz revealed that he has not yet had the opportunity to play golf with Nadal. However, he acknowledged that he had seen Nadal’s golf swing. Millman then alluded to a viral video of Jannik Sinner‘s golf swing, asking Alcaraz if he had also seen that, to which the Spaniard smiled and replied he had.
Millman then asked Alcaraz to rank the three swings- Alcaraz’s, Nadal’s, and Sinner’s, according to effectiveness. In a cheeky remark, Alcaraz ranked his golf swing as the best, humorously placing Nadal second and Sinner third.

The third seed looked in control early on, taking the first set 6-1 and leading 3-1 in the second. However, his level dropped for about 20 minutes, and Shevchenko took advantage. The Russian went ahead 5-3 in the second set as Alcaraz struggled with his shots.
Despite the setback, Alcaraz recovered quickly. He played with more focus and aggression, turning the second set around to win it 7-5. In the third set, he dominated with clever shots and kept Shevchenko on the move. The match lasted one hour and 54 minutes.
Alcaraz is into the second round of the Australian Open for the fourth year in a row. His next opponent is Yoshihito Nishioka. The Spaniard, already a four-time Grand Slam champion, is hoping to win his fifth major title during this tournament.
