Carlos Alcaraz is through to the third round of the Australian Open after securing straight-set wins over Adam Walton and Yannick Hanfmann. After his win over the German, the first seed offered his condolences to the victims of the train crash in Spain.
On Sunday evening, two high-speed trains collided in the southern part of Spain. In what was also the worst train accident over a decade in the country, 42 people lost their lives, leaving more than 120 people injured.
Lots of encouragement regarding what’s happening in Spain.

Alcaraz will next be locking horns with 32nd seed Corentin Moutet, whom he will be meeting for the first time. The Frenchman received a walkover from Michael Zheng in the previous round.
Alcaraz is bidding to become the youngest man in the Open Era to complete the Career Grand Slam. Rafael Nadal currently holds this record, having won the 2010 US Open at the age of 24. The winner of the 2022 US Open, 2023 and 2024 Wimbledon, and 2024 and 2025 French Open champion has yet to make the semifinals of the Melbourne Slam.
He made the quarterfinals twice- Alexander Zverev knocked him out in 2024, while Novak Djokovic knocked him out last year. Alcaraz did not feature in any warm-up tournaments prior to the first Major of the season and instead played an exhibition match against two-time Australian Open defending champion Jannik Sinner in South Korea.
Alex Corretja doesn’t think Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner will win every Major this year
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner split the last eight Grand Slam titles. They, in fact, met in three of the four Grand Slam finals last year. But Alex Corretja doesn’t think the World No.1 and the World No.2 will dominate in the Major this year.

I think this year we are going to have surprises. I don’t think it’s going to be a walk in the park for Carlos and Jannik this year. I don’t think it is going to be easy for them to win two and two in the Slams. I think we could have a different winner this year. We have some guys like [Lorenzo] Musetti knocking on the door, and I think he will have his chances. I’m waiting for Jack Draper to come back, as I think he has a game that will be very difficult for the opponents.
Alex Corretja told Tennis 365
Sinner dominated the most in the 2024 season, winning eight titles from nine finals, while last year, it was the Spaniard who achieved the most, taking home eight trophies from 11 finals. They met in six finals, with Sinner winning at Wimbledon and the ATP Finals, while Alcaraz defeated him at the Italian Open, French Open, Cincinnati Masters, and the US Open.
Ben Shelton is the same if he can get the momentum in Australia, and [Alexander] Bublik is also looking a lot more mature, more stable. It makes it more interesting if we have more players. I would never say it could get boring, but more players challenging is good. It is good for the game that we have this Sinner-Alcaraz rivalry.
Alex Corretja added
Sinner is chasing his third consecutive title in Melbourne. In 2024, he defeated Daniil Medvedev, while last year, he went past Alexander Zverev. If he wins one more title, he will become the second man after Novak Djokovic to complete the three-peat.
Sinner received the walkover from Hugo Gaston in the first round of the ongoing Major. He is next scheduled to play James Duckworth.
