Carlos Alcaraz was Team Europe’s star player in the Laver Cup triumph last week. However, the Spaniard was without his compatriot Rafael Nadal, who withdrew a few weeks before the event. Alcaraz has admitted that he missed the 38-year-old’s influence at the Laver Cup.
Nadal has yet to play a professional match since the Paris Olympics, where he partnered with Alcaraz in the doubles. He exited in the second round of the singles after losing to Novak Djokovic and crashed out of the doubles quarterfinals. The 38-year-old then skipped the US Open before withdrawing from the Laver Cup.
Nadal was not missed in Berlin as Team Europe came from behind to beat Team World. Despite trailing 8-4 heading into the final day of the event, Team Europe snatched the title with three wins out of four matches on the third day, including Alcaraz’s defeat of Taylor Fritz.
Alcaraz didn’t have much time to take in the celebration at the competition, as he traveled to China for the Beijing Open. Ahead of the opening match against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, he admitted that he missed Nadal in the Laver Cup despite helping Team Europe win the title.
I'm not going to lie, I missed him [Nadal] in the Laver Cup. I don't want to think that it's a potential last dance for him in Malaga. I just want to enjoy seeing him on court as much as I can.Carlos Alcaraz said at a China Open press conference
Alcaraz and Nadal will reunite for the Davis Cup Final Eight phase in Malaga. The 38-year-old has been on the team list and may play in the doubles of the event. He has a wealth of experience playing at the Davis Cup having won it four times in his career.
ATP confirms Carlos Alcaraz’s qualification for the ATP Finals in Turin
Carlos Alcaraz has become the third player to qualify for the ATP Finals in November. The 21-year-old joins Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev, who have already booked their place at the event. Alcaraz was supposed to make his debut at the competition in 2022, but injury forced him to withdraw.

Last year, Alcaraz made his debut and reached the semifinals after beating Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev in the group stage. However, he lost to Novak Djokovic in the last four. This year, he has improved his game, winning two Grand Slams, the French Open and Wimbledon.
Alcaraz won his fifth Masters 1000 at Indian Wells in March after beating Medvedev in straight sets and claimed the singles silver medal at the Paris Olympics. He owns a 43-9 win-loss record this season and is among the favorites to win the China Open, which begins on Wednesday (September 25).
