In Short
  • Carlos Alcaraz will face Alexander Bublik in the quarterfinals of the Monte-Carlo Masters, marking their first head-to-head match.
  • Bublik described Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner as "untouchables" in Grand Slam events, a claim Alcaraz disagrees with.
  • Alcaraz is defending 4,300 points on clay this season, while Sinner aims for the No.1 ranking by defending 1,950 points.

Carlos Alcaraz has a huge challenge in front of him in the form of Alexander Bublik. The Spaniard will be up against Bublik in the quarterfinals of the Monte-Carlo Masters on Friday (April 10), and it will be their first head-to-head meeting.

Bublik recently claimed that Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are “untouchables” in Grand Slam events, given that since 2024, only these two players have tasted success in Majors. The Kazakh ace also said the only players who are able to beat Sinner in the Majors are Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. The Italian ace lost two Major finals to Alcaraz and this year’s Australian Open semifinal to the Serb.

Alcaraz, at the press conference after surviving a scare in the third round against Tomas Martin Etcheverry, was asked about Bublik’s comment.

Well, Sinner and I have won the last nine Grand Slams, but still, I don’t believe we’re unbeatable. But a player like Bublik, who’s top 10, saying that about us really boosts our confidence a lot. Someone who understands the game as well as he does, saying that we don’t lose in the Majors, helps us play with a ton of confidence. But to be honest, I don’t agree with that.

In this year’s Australian Open final, Alcaraz completed the Career Grand Slam with a four-set victory over Djokovic. In this year’s French Open, while Alcaraz will be bidding to complete the three-peat, Sinner’s goal will be to achieve the Career Grand Slam milestone.

In Monte Carlo, Sinner and Alcaraz are battling for the No.1 spot. Because Alcaraz is defending 1,000 points, Sinner’s victory will take him to the top. Sinner also dropped a set in his third-round match against Tomas Machac and is set to play Felix Auger-Aliassime in the last eight.

Alcaraz, in fact, has the huge task of defending 4,300 points on clay, while the South Tyrol native will defend 1,950 points as he finished as the runner-up in last year’s Italian Open and the French Open finals. Last year on clay, Alcaraz won titles in Monte Carlo, Rome, and Paris, and also finished as the runner-up in Barcelona.

Carlos Alcaraz has ordered his own catamaran

Carlos Alcaraz did not have great runs by his own standards in the two Sunshine Double events. He lost to Daniil Medvedev in the Indian Wells semifinal and to Sebastian Korda in the Miami Open third round.

After his Miami exit, images of him on a catamaran emerged online. It wasn’t his boat, but he will soon have his custom Ultima 88 catamaran. Tommy Paul, who loves offshore fishing, wants to come there too.

Mine, they’re gonna build it. It’s going to take one year, one year and a half. So I’m super excited about it. During the sea, everything is chill. My thing to disconnect from everything. I saw Tommy Paul saying like… I better invite him. I will for sure. But I’ll tell him you’re gonna take me out for fishing. Half and half, I’m gonna make a deal with him.

Carlos Alcaraz told Tennis Channel

Paul, who was last seen in action in the Houston Open final, has skipped the Monte-Carlo Masters. The 28-year-old ended his title drought in his home tournament with a three-set victory over Roman Andres Burruchaga.

If Alcaraz reaches the semifinal of the Monte-Carlo Masters, he will lock horns with fifth seed Alex de Minaur or last year’s Shanghai Masters champion Valentin Vacherot, who is aiming to become the first local player to win the title in The Principality.

In Monte Carlo, Alcaraz is chasing his third title of the season. Following his Australian Open win, he beat Arthur Fils in the Qatar Open final, winning his maiden title in the tournament.
