Carlos Alcaraz doesn’t ‘agree’ with Patrick Mouratoglou’s comment on Jannik Sinner who is the ‘strongest’ player right now

Carlos Alcaraz will try to forget his disappointing 2025 Australian Open run to focus on the Rotterdam Open, where he will kick start his campaign with a first-round match against Botic van de Zandschulp. Alcaraz is the top seed because Jannik Sinner decided to withdraw to rest and recover after he defended the title at the Melbourne Slam.

A few days ago, Serena Williams‘ former coach Patrick Mouratoglou made his feelings known about who is the best tennis player at present. He was not of the opinion that Sinner, after clinching eight titles, including two Majors last year, along with his win at the 2025 Australian Open, should be called the best player. Alcaraz didn’t agree with his opinion.

But for me, and for the tennis players who play against him, Jannik is definitely the strongest. It’s incredible that he practically always wins. He manages not to have ups and downs and is always very focused. I saw that video of Mouratoglou, but I don’t agree with him because when Jannik plays a tournament he either wins it or reaches the final.

Carlos Alcaraz said at the press conference

Mouratoglou’s opinions were based on the fact that Sinner, who had a 73-6 win-loss record last season, lost three of those matches to Alcaraz in their three meetings. According to Naomi Osaka‘s coach, if Alcaraz plays to his full potential against Sinner, then it would be difficult to predict who will emerge as the winner.

But for Alcaraz, it’s ‘crazy’ that Sinner lost just six matches last year. The Spaniard, not only won the three matches he played against the World No.1, but is 6-4 in their head-to-head clashes.

Carlos Alcaraz explains why Jannik Sinner withdrew from the Rotterdam Open

Jannik Sinner started his season at the Australian Open, and after defending the title with a straight-set win over Alexander Zverev, he chose not to defend the Rotterdam Open. Last year, the Italian beat Alex de Minaur to take home the trophy.

Carlos Alcaraz, when asked to comment on Sinner’s absence, stated that he understands why the 23-year-old decided to pull out of the event. Alcaraz said it’s hard to be healthy and physically ready for another tournament in a short time.

He probably didn’t feel ready to step on the court again. Every player has to be smart about their schedule. So, it’s understandable that he didn’t play.

Alcaraz, in the first-round, will be up against a player who knocked him out of last year’s US Open. Botic van de Zandschulp has met the tennis ace from Murcia three times and is 1-2 in their head-to-head meetings.
