Ahead of the US Open final, when reports emerged that Donald Trump would be watching the Carlos Alcaraz versus Jannik Sinner match, the eventual winner was asked about his thoughts on the same. Alcaraz said Trump’s presence at Arthur Ashe Stadium would be “great” for tennis.

The Spaniard clinched the title with a four-set win over the Italian. Moments after his win, when the camera panned toward Trump, his ‘unimpressed’ expression caught the attention of the fans as they indulged in mocking the US President on social media.

The World No.1, during an interview with El Pais, was asked about his remark on Trump; whether he was aware of the repercussions of his statements.

I’m clear that what I say can be greatly magnified. If you say something that isn’t frowned upon, but you don’t use the right words, it can cause problems. I simply try to be as careful as possible about what I say and how I say it, because often, when someone is upset because they’ve lost or had a bad day, it’s hard to measure their words. I try to do it this way, always expressing myself with respect and sportsmanship.

Alcaraz has so far played nine finals this year, while Sinner has reached five, winning two titles- both Grand Slam ones, at the Australian Open by defeating World No.3 Alexander Zverev and at Wimbledon by taking his revenge for the French Open defeat on the six-time Grand Slam champion.

The win helped Carlos Alcaraz reclaim his No.1 spot from Jannik Sinner, who has now dropped to the second position after failing to defend five titles this season, which also included the US Open, Miami Open, and the Cincinnati Masters. The US Open was Alcaraz’s seventh title of the season.

Alcaraz reached the top of the rankings in 2022 when he took home his career’s first Grand Slam title at the US Open by defeating Casper Ruud, becoming the youngest man to become No.1.

Novak Djokovic then snatched the No.1 ranking from him by winning his 24th Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open, but was dethroned by Sinner, who made his debut at the top in June last year on the back of consistent performances and stayed there for 65 consecutive weeks.

As Alcaraz did not have many points to defend on the North American hard court swing, he made the No.1 ranking one of his main goals. During the aforementioned interview with El Pais, Alcaraz talked about his current position.

Yes, that’s right. One of the goals this season was to try to recover as soon as possible, or before the end of the year. So it’s a dream. On top of that, if it happens on the same day you win a Grand Slam, it tastes even better.

Alcaraz, who now holds a 10-5 head-to-head lead over the four-time Grand Slam champion, has clashed with his arch-rival in the final whenever they are in a draw since the Italian Open this season. Sinner won just once in the five encounters, at Wimbledon, while in Cincinnati, he was forced to give a walkover because he was sick.

The 22-year-old has become the second youngest man after Bjorn Borg to clinch six Majors. He also has now 14 Big Titles, four of which he added to his title cabinet this year (Monte Carlo Masters, Italian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon).

Sinner’s Big Titles tally is nine (four Majors and Masters 1000 each and one ATP Finals). The two youngsters will next be playing the China Open to kick start their campaign on the Asian swing.
