World No.3 Carlos Alcaraz passed the test of Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Roland Garros quarter-finals by winning 6-3, 7-6 (3), 6-4. The Spaniard improved to 6-0 in his head-to-head against the Greek and has made it to his second consecutive semi-final at the clay slam.
Alcaraz is looking forward to renewing his rivalry with the second seed, Jannik Sinner, in the Roland Garros semi-finals. The Italian also secured a straight-set victory over Grigor Dimitrov in his quarterfinal match, winning 6-2, 6-4, 7-6.
I am glad to have him on the tour, I am glad to have him at this level, because thanks to him, I push myself to be better, to be a better player, to give my 100% every day, to wake up in the morning to want to improve my game, to want to beat him.Carlos Alcaraz said in his on-court interview
Both players were coming into this year’s Roland Garros with injury concerns. Alcaraz struggled with an elbow problem, whereas Sinner had issues with his hip. However, both seem to be addressing their problems and looking forward to making it to their first French Open final.
The duo have won three Grand Slam events combined and currently hold the Australian Open and Wimbledon crowns. They split their eight meetings at 4-4, with Alcaraz winning their lone match in 2024 in the Indian Wells semi-final. With Novak Djokovic withdrawing due to a torn meniscus, the winner of this semi-final will be the favorite to win his first Roland Garros title.
Carlos Alcaraz brushes aside Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach Roland Garros semi-finals
Third seed Carlos Alcaraz has secured his spot in the French Open semi-finals for the second consecutive year with a convincing straight set victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Greece player’s costly errors haunted him throughout the match, while the Spaniard remained largely untroubled.
The first set saw Alcaraz doing all the safe play as Tsitsipas struggled, committing 33 unforced errors. The Wimbledon champion wrapped up the set in just 31 minutes. Despite the 2021 French Open finalist rallying from a breakdown in the second set to force a tie-break, Alcaraz dominated.
In the tie-break, Tsitsipas voiced complaints to the chair umpire about Alcaraz’s “extended grunt,” resulting in laughter from his opponent and disapproval from the crowd. Alcaraz ultimately won the tie-break 7-3.
The intensity escalated in the third set, with both players fiercely contesting each point. However, Tsitsipas’ two double faults in the seventh game allowed Alcaraz to secure the crucial break he needed. From that point on, the two-time Grand Slam champion maintained control, confidently holding his service games to secure his place in the semi-finals.
