World No. 1 Jannik Sinner and World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz have been the biggest names on the 2024 ATP Tour. The two tennis stars claimed all four Grand Slam titles this year and are top favorites for the ATP Finals in Turin.

However, they are already making headlines before hitting their first ball at the tournament. In a lighthearted off-court exchange, Sinner asked Alcaraz about his biggest weakness. The Spaniard humorously replied that it was his volley.

Whether or not his volley is an issue, Alcaraz has beaten Sinner in all three of their 2024 encounters. Each of their matches has gone to a deciding set, with their five-set battle at Roland Garros hailed as the match of the tournament.

Sinner will open his ATP Finals campaign against Alex de Minaur after being a finalist in last year’s event. Alcaraz, meanwhile, will begin his tournament against Casper Ruud.

Carlos Alcaraz is aiming for his best result yet at the ATP Finals in 2024, hoping to improve on last year’s semi-final finish. The Spaniard made his debut at the ATP Finals in 2023 after missing the 2022 tournament due to an injury.

I already said last year that I wanted to be better in this part of the season, to play better tennis, to be better physically and above all mentally, to arrive fresher at this stage. I’m not going to say that I’m completely fresh, but I’m fresher than last year. I’d say that I’m arriving at this tournament, which is the penultimate one, in pretty good shape. Little things are coming up, but they’re normal. I’m facing it motivated and wanting to play good tennis.

He ended last season battling fitness issues but told Marca he has been focused on preparing well for this year. In 2023, Alcaraz advanced from his group with victories over Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev before losing to Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals.

This year, Alcaraz qualified for the ATP Finals after another standout season. The 21-year-old won his third Grand Slam by defending his Wimbledon title, defeating Djokovic.

He also captured his first French Open title by beating Alexander Zverev. In addition, Alcaraz won a Masters 1000 title and earned an Olympic silver medal, making it a remarkable year—one he hopes to make even better with a big win in Turin.
