Carlos Alcaraz has expressed his hope of joining the Big 3 in the history books through his rivalry with Jannik Sinner. Alcaraz and Sinner have been the standout players of 2024, splitting the four Grand Slam titles.
After leading Team Europe to their fifth Laver Cup title, Alcaraz feels he has more historic chapters to write in his career. The former World No. 1 hopes that he and Sinner can push each other to reach the heights of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic.
Well, a lot of people talk about it, and I hear it. I’m not going to lie, I hope so. I hope that our rivalry is going to be or almost be like the Big Three had during their whole careers. I don’t know. This is the first year that we shared all the Grand Slams. Hopefully it’s going to keep going like that, sharing great moments, fighting for the great tournaments, the Grand Slams, Masters 1000. So let’s see how it’s going to be in the future, the next few years, if we are going to stay like that at this level. I think we are going to build or create a relationship off the court as well.Carlos Alcaraz in the Laver Cup post-tournament press conference
Sinner started the season by winning the Australian Open, beating Daniil Medvedev in five sets in the final. However, Alcaraz regrouped by winning Roland Garros and Wimbledon back-to-back. The Spaniard joined Federer and Djokovic in the elite group of players who have successfully defended their Wimbledon title.
So hopefully I have him here on the tour for a long time because he pushes me to be a better player every day. He pushes me to practice at 100% just to try to beat him in the next matches. It’s great and hopefully we’ll have that rivalry that the Big Three had in their careers.Carlos Alcaraz added
Sinner ended the Grand Slam season on a high, winning the US Open title and strengthening his hold on the World No. 1 ranking. Alcaraz and Sinner have faced each other twice this season, with the Spaniard winning both encounters.
Carlos Alcaraz makes history at the Laver Cup
World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz made history in 2024 with massive success at both the Grand Slam level and the Olympic Games. However, he added even more historic achievements to his impressive CV at this year’s Laver Cup.
Alcaraz secured eight of Team Europe’s 13 points in their tournament-winning campaign, the highest tally for a single player in Laver Cup history. The previous record was held by Roger Federer, who secured 7 points in the inaugural edition of the Laver Cup in 2017. That edition also came down to the final match, with Federer defeating Nick Kyrgios in a final-set tiebreaker.
Alcaraz began his Laver Cup debut with a doubles loss alongside Alexander Zverev on the opening day. However, he regrouped with a convincing singles win against Ben Shelton on Day 2.
On the final day, it was all about the former World No. 1. First, he won the doubles match with Casper Ruud to bring Team Europe back into contention. After Zverev’s singles win, it was left to Alcaraz to finish the job against Taylor Fritz, which he did in straight sets.
