Spanish tennis ace Carlos Alcaraz is excited to play at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. The 21-year-old claims it thrills him more to be playing at the Grand Slam tournament as the defending champion. As Alcaraz beat Djokovic in a thrilling final at the last year’s championships, the Spaniard is hoping to replicate his performance this year.
Alcaraz will enter the tournament as one of the title favorites. Having won the title at the 2024 Roland Garros, the 21-year-old is high on confidence. Although Alcaraz could not defend his title at the Queen’s Club Championships, he is backing himself to do the job at the All-England Club.
It is special to be back in Wimbled. It is even more special to be back as the defending champion. But I am trying not to think too much about it and am just here to get the same result as last year. So, I have to be really focused every day in every practice session and stay away from the emotion that I won last year, if I want to do the same this year.Carlos Alcaraz said in an exclusive interview with Star Sports
However, the Spaniard knows that it won’t be an easy task considering all the top seeds will be eyeing for that ultimate prize. Jannik Sinner is one of Alcaraz’s toughest rivals while Daniil Medvedev will also pose a challenge. Novak Djokovic, meanwhile, is also among the title contenders despite his knee problems. Nevertheless, Alcaraz is not thinking too far ahead.
Carlos Alcaraz ready to defend his title in London
Although he did not have the desired start to the grass-court swing, Carlos Alcaraz is ready to defend his crown at the Championships. The 21-year-old had a good time in his practice session. Alcaraz played against Daniil Medvedev on the Center Court for 45 minutes and won the first set and led 1-0 in the second set.
The Spaniard will open his campaign against Estonian qualifier Mark Lajal. Alcaraz is seeded to meet Frenchman Ugo Humbert in the fourth round and could play eighth seed Casper Ruud or Queen’s champion Tommy Paul in the quarter-finals.
In the semifinals, the 21-year-old can meet Jannik Sinner who recently won the title in Halle. The two players share a great rivalry with the Spaniard leading the head-to-head record 5-4. It is worth noting that, Alcaraz beat Sinner in the Roland Garros semifinal before thumping Alexander Zverev in the final.
Considering his form this season, where Alcaraz has won two big titles- Indian Wells Open and Roland Garros, and his record on grass, the three-time Grand Slam champion is expected to successfully defend his crown.
