In Short
  • Jannik Sinner defeated Carlos Alcaraz 7-6(5), 6-3 to win the Monte Carlo Masters.
  • Sinner's victory marks his second clay-court title and fourth consecutive Masters 1000 title.
  • Sinner will reclaim the ATP No.1 ranking with a narrow lead over Alcaraz in points.

Before Sunday (April 12), only one man had won back-to-back titles at the Indian Wells, Miami Open, and the Monte-Carlo Masters in the same calendar year. And it was none other than Novak Djokovic. Another man has now joined him in the list.

Jannik Sinner produced a dominating performance against his arch-rival Carlos Alcaraz, denying him his second consecutive title in the tournament with a 7-6(5), 6-3 victory in two hours and 15 minutes. The Italian ace captured his career’s second clay-court title and the first one in The Principality.

Hard court, grass, clay court, next time…well played, well played,” Alcaraz told the newly crowned champion during the customary handshake, with both once again displaying that great sportmanship that rarely fails to win the hearts of the tennis community.

It was their meeting since the title clash of the 2025 ATP Finals, where Sinner defended his crown with a straight-set win. This victory has helped the four-time Major champion improve his head-to-head record over Alcaraz to 7-10.

It’s impressive what you’re achieving right now. As far as I’m concerned, just one man in the Open Era won the Sunshine Double and the Monte Carlo. You’re the second one to achieve it. It’s something incredible. It’s so difficult to make that happen. Congratulations for everything and for the work you’re doing with your team. I can see your whole family here and your team. Just really happy to see you winning titles in front of them.

Carlos Alcaraz said during the on-court interview

Sinner has become the third player in history to win four consecutive Masters 1000 titles after Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, who is also a record 11-time winner in Monaco. Before this and his Sunshine Double victories, Sinner had won last year’s Paris Masters against Felix Auger-Aliassime. His last defeat at this level came in the third round of the 2025 Shanghai Masters.

It means a lot to me. At the same time, the ranking is secondary. I’m very happy to win at least one big trophy on this surface. I haven’t done it before. It means a lot to me.

Jannik Sinner said during the on-court interview

Sinner’s run in the Masters 1000 events since Paris last year only shows what a consistent player he is. He did not drop a set en route to the title in Paris, Indian Wells, and Miami. He would have won four consecutive Masters 1000 titles without dropping a set had not Tomas Machac taken the second set off him in the round of 16.

I felt close on the return games. I had a feeling the new balls helped me. The ball change was at 2-1. I tried to stay there mentally. Trying to keep pushing. I felt a bit tired. I tried to keep up with the right mentality. Having this trophy with me now means a lot to me. It’s a completely different tournament. I come here, sleeping at home, and everything. It means a lot.

Jannik Sinner added

Sinner is on a 22-match winning streak in Masters 1000 events. The 24-year-old is now also tied with Alcaraz in the Masters 1000 title tally (eight). It was the first time the Murcia native lost a match on clay-court since the 2025 Barcelona Open, as he won the Italian Open and the French Open by defeating the World No.2.
