Top seed Jannik Sinner and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz made U23 history by reaching the Wimbledon quarter-final on Sunday. The duo defeated Ben Shelton and Ugo Humbert in their respective fourth-round encounters.

By reaching the Wimbledon quarter-final, Sinner and Alcaraz have now made the last eight of the Australian Open, Roland Garros, and Wimbledon in the same year. This is only the second time that two U23 players have reached this milestone; the first was when Pete Sampras and Jim Courier did so in 1993.

The year initially saw Sinner win his first Grand Slam at the Australian Open, beating defending champion Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals and finals, respectively. He defeated the Russian after coming back from two sets down to lift his first major down under.

Sinner built on his victory in Australia by winning his first ATP 500 title in Rotterdam. After that, Alcaraz appeared on the scene by halting the Italian’s unbeaten run in the Indian Wells semi-finals. The Spaniard beat Medvedev comfortably to defend his Indian Wells title.

Sinner picked up his level again in Miami, beating Grigor Dimitrov in the final to win the second Masters 1000 title of his career. During the clay season, both players initially went out of the picture. Alcaraz was struggling with an elbow injury, and Sinner had a hip injury that he sustained at Monte Carlo.

Neither player won any of the three Masters 1000 titles on the dirt and went to Roland Garros without ideal preparation. However, the duo produced an iconic semi-final match, where Alcaraz won in five sets to reach his first final in Paris. On the other hand, Sinner became the first Italian to be ranked World No. 1 after Djokovic withdrew from his quarter-final due to a meniscus injury.

Alcaraz won the third Grand Slam of his career, beating Alexander Zverev in five sets in the Roland Garros final. Sinner won his first title as the World No. 1 in Halle, beating Hubert Hurkacz in two tiebreak sets.
