Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner once again met each other – this time, on a practice court in Cincinnati. Both the top players skipped the Canadian Open and will start their campaign on the North American hard-court swing at the Cincinnati Masters.
Sinner will enter the tournament as the defending champion. Last year, he clinched the win in the final against home favorite Frances Tiafoe, whereas Alcaraz suffered a shock opening-round exit. Alcaraz is a former finalist in Cincinnati. Back in 2023, he couldn’t overcome 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, who has deemed it best to skip the Cincinnati Masters this year as well.
Both players have arrived in Cincinnati. In a video that’s doing rounds on social media, Sinner could be seen arriving for his practice session after Alcaraz completed his with 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev. The two young rivals, who are good friends off the court, talked about the things they did in their off time. Well, both told each other that they did “nothing crazy“.
Nothing crazy (laughs). Yeah, at home, I mean, I spent two weeks at home, one week in the South of Spain. It was nice. It was nice. Three weeks in summer at home, you know, felt like bored. At least one year that I didn’t see, you know, all my friends, all the people, you know, doing whatever they want.

Alcaraz and Sinner could schedule their fourth clash of the season if they both reach the championship match of the Cincinnati Open, given that they will be the second and first seeds, respectively. In their previous three meetings this year, Alcaraz secured the win twice – in Rome and Paris.
At Roland Garros, Alcaraz came from two sets down and saved three championship points to defend his title. But Sinner avenged his defeat by denying the Spaniard a three-peat at Wimbledon with a four-set win.
Sinner will be chasing his third title of the season in Cincinnati. The two titles he clinched were Grand Slam ones – in Melbourne and London. Alcaraz has achieved the most success on the men’s tour this season so far, reaching seven finals and winning five titles, including three on the European clay swing.
Carlos Alcaraz explains the importance of a break amid a hectic schedule
Carlos Alcaraz has often criticized the 11-month tennis calendar and also wants the ATP to remove some tournaments so that players get more time for vacation. During an interview with the Financial Times, the 22-year-old explained why disconnecting from work for a while is the key to producing good performance on a consistent basis.

But in the end, it’s like everything else. If you play every day and you don’t have a break for yourself, to disconnect, that excitement kind of fades. So I always try to find moments of fun – of wanting to live.
The Cincinnati Masters is scheduled to start on August 7. The five-time champion will face the winner of the first-round match between Mattia Bellucci and Damir Dzumhur. Alcaraz has never faced the Italian ace but holds a 1-0 head-to-head record over the World No.54.
Alcaraz has so far lifted seven Masters 1000 titles. Apart from these, he has also reached one more final- in the 2023 Cincinnati Masters. This season, he added two Masters 1000 trophies to his name- the Monte Carlo Masters by beating Lorenzo Musetti and the Italian Open by defeating Jannik Sinner.
After Cincinnati, the Murcia native will be gearing up for the US Open, where he lost in the second round last year. Alcaraz captured his career’s first Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows back in 2022.
