Dominic Thiem has finally hung up his racket after featuring at his home event in Vienna. Several players, the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, and Grigor Dimitrov, heaped massive praise on the 2020 US Open champion ahead of his last dance.
Thiem was a ‘tough opponent’ for Daniil Medvedev, while Ben Shelton used to think the Austrian was one of the most ‘unbeatable’ players on the Tour. Casper Ruud said Thiem had a complete career, while Zverev called him an ‘incredible fighter’. Jannik Sinner, however, still hoped to see him more on tour.
Although Alcaraz never got the chance to play against Thiem, he practiced with him in 2020 when he was 16 years old. Following Thiem’s retirement announcement, Alcaraz revealed his brother was a huge fan of the Austrian and used to watch his matches always to be like him.

Dominic Thiem retired after clinching 17 ATP titles
Dominic Thiem, after his victory in the US Open final over Alexander Zverev, injured his wrist and since then, it hasn’t healed completely. The wrist injury ruined his career and forced him to call time on his career.
Although for over two decades the Big 3 (Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer) completely dominated tennis, Thiem was one of the players to defeat them on several occasions. Apart from the US Open win, Thiem is also a three-time Grand Slam finalist as he reached the summit clashes of the 2020 Australian Open (lost to Djokovic), and the 2018 and 2019 French Open (lost to Nadal).
In a total of 35 matches against the three greats, Thiem won 16 times. The 31-year-old was the only player after Djokovic to beat Nadal on clay four times. The US Open was one of the 17 ATP titles he won in his career and became World No. 3 in 2020.
