Carlos Alcaraz had an eye on his arch-rival Jannik Sinner for most of the One Point Slam event at the Australian Open. The duo were among the 24 professional players competing in the tournament ahead of the first Grand Slam kick-off on January 18. However, both players failed to reach the final of the event.
The one-day tournament was hosted at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. For the first time since the Inaugural One Point Slam event in 2025, it featured a host of top-10 players, including Iga Swiatek, Jasmine Paolini, and Amanda Anisimova. Last year, Andrey Rublev was the only top-10 player involved in the event.
Rublev was given a bye in the first round, then reached the quarter-finals before hitting his one and only serve into the net. The competition was won by Australian amateur Omar Jaska, claiming just 60,000 Australian dollars. This year, the prize money is 1 million Australian dollars, and that has attracted several star players.
Alcaraz first took to the court and defeated his second-round opponent without too much effort. He then stood beside Rublev to watch Sinner take on Pablo Carreno Busta. Sinner hit a clean serve to start his match against Busta before hitting an incredible forehand to win the match to the delight of the crowd.
However, both Alcaraz and Sinner crashed out in the round of 16 of the One Point Slam event. The Spaniard lost to a former WTA No.3 after succumbing to the Greek star, who handled the baseline exchange well and watched as Alcaraz rushed a drop shot that fell too short. Sinner then went on to lose to amateur player Jordan Smith.

Sinner failed to serve properly against Smith, which gave the Australian a place in the quarter-finals. He then went on to face Amanda Anisimova, who had defeated Daniil Medvedev in the opening rounds. Smith reached the final after beating Pedro Martinez and claimed the eye-catching prize money after defeating Joanna Garland.
The One Point Slam event has caught the attention of fans, which was similar to what the US Open organizers achieved with the standalone mixed doubles championship before the main draw in August. The event brought together Paris, such as Emma Raducanu and Alcaraz, Casper Ruud and Swiatek, Jessica Pegula, and Jack Draper.
Alex Corretja reacts to how Carlos Alcaraz will perform without Juan Carlos Ferrero at the Australian Open
Since Carlos Alcaraz announced he has parted ways with Juan Carlos Ferrero, there has been debate about whether the Spanish coach’s absence will make the World No.1 play poorly on the court. Alcaraz and Ferrero worked together for seven years before their split, with the latter helping the former to win six Grand Slams.

During a conversation on TNT Sports, tennis legend Alex Corretja was asked if Alcaraz would be affected by Ferrero’s split at the tournament. The former tennis player noted that he hopes the situation doesn’t affect the 22-year-old at the Australian Open, where he needs to prove that he can play better tennis without Ferrero:
I hope it won’t affect him, but we have to see what happens when he plays and does not have Juan Carlos in the box. The thing is, he has been with Sami Lopez in the past, he already had that combination with him last year and I feel like he is ready for this. He is fired up for the new season and about having the chance to play well at Melbourne because he has never won there.
Alcaraz will be aiming to win the Australian Open for the first time in his career, having reached the quarter-finals twice. Should the World No.1 claim the first Grand Slam of the season, he will become the youngest man to ever complete a Career Grand Slam.
