Carlos Alcaraz sent Arthur Ashe Stadium into chaos with a remarkable shot around the net post during his US Open mixed doubles match with Emma Raducanu. The Spaniard had only just lifted the Cincinnati Open trophy less than a day earlier before stepping onto court in New York.

Alcaraz and Raducanu teamed up to face Britain’s Jack Draper and world No. 4 Jessica Pegula. The atmosphere was electric as the crowd anticipated a high-quality contest featuring four top names.

Draper and Pegula struck first, breaking Alcaraz’s serve in the opening game to take control of the first set. Their sharp start earned them the advantage as they quickly moved ahead. But the world No. 2 lifted his game as the match wore on. During Pegula’s service game, Alcaraz produced an extraordinary winner around the post, leaving his opponents and the crowd stunned.

Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz lose in US Open mixed doubles

Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz were knocked out in the first round of the 2025 US Open mixed doubles, losing to top seeds Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula. The match began poorly for the pair as Alcaraz dropped serve in the opening game, with errors from both players helping Draper and Pegula gain control.

The top seeds carried their momentum through the set. Draper’s strong start and Pegula’s consistency kept Raducanu and Alcaraz under pressure. Serving at 3-2, Draper and Pegula saved a fightback and secured the opening set on a deciding point.

Alcaraz brought the crowd to life in the second set with a spectacular running forehand around the post. However, he was broken again in the very next game, undoing the momentum. Though Raducanu and Alcaraz saved three match points on her serve later in the set, their opponents closed out the match decisively in the following game.

Draper and Pegula earned the No. 1 seeding with their combined singles rankings after Draper’s earlier partners, Zheng Qinwen and Paula Badosa, withdrew through injury. There had been speculation Alcaraz might skip the mixed doubles after his demanding run at the Cincinnati Masters, where he lifted the trophy when Jannik Sinner retired ill in the final.

Points earned by Carlos Alcaraz in Cincinnati

The 2025 Cincinnati Open final lasted just 23 minutes and ended after only five games, but both Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner still collected big prize money and valuable ranking points. What was expected to be another thrilling chapter in their rivalry was cut short as Sinner, struggling with illness, was forced to retire while trailing 0-5 in the opening set.

This result gave Alcaraz a 9-5 lead in their head-to-head record. The Spaniard has now won three of their last four finals, including triumphs at the Italian Open and French Open. Sinner, however, had his own highlight earlier in the season with a Wimbledon title.

For Alcaraz, the victory marked his eighth ATP Masters 1000 trophy and his 22nd career singles title, six of which have come in 2025 alone. Sinner remains on 20 career titles, including four at the Masters 1000 level. Their duel also carries extra weight as the battle for the ATP No. 1 ranking continues ahead of the US Open.

The rankings picture shifted because both players were defending points from last year’s Canadian and Cincinnati events. Sinner, who had reached the Montreal quarter-finals and won Cincinnati in 2024, surrendered 1,200 points. With only 650 points gained from this year’s final run, he leaves the tournament with a net loss of 550.
