Carlos Alcaraz thinks Donald Trump‘s presence in the final of the US Open will be “great for tennis”. The match, scheduled on Sunday (September 7), will see the Spaniard lock horns with his arch-rival Jannik Sinner for the fifth time this season.

Alcaraz took just two hours and 23 minutes to become a reason behind Novak Djokovic‘s end of campaign in Grand Slam events this season, improving his head-to-head record to 4-5. Sinner, in his semifinal, dropped the second set but eventually knocked out Felix Auger-Aliassime to tie the head-to-head tally to 2-2.

Alcaraz’s head-to-head record over Sinner will be 10-5 if he is successful in ending the US Open in his favor for the second time. His first Grand Slam title came in New York in 2022 after defeating Casper Ruud.

At the press conference after eliminating the Serb, Alcaraz was asked about Trump’s decision to make his first appearance at Flushing Meadows for the first time in a decade.

Well, it’s… I mean, I think that the tournament… It’s a privilege for the tournament having the president from every country just to support of the tournament and to support the match.

On Friday, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced that the 47th President of the United States has planned a visit to the US Open as a guest in a client suite. Prior to this year, Trump attended the US Open in 2015.

For me, playing in front of him… To be honest, I will try not to be focused, and I will try not to think about it. I don’t want myself to be nervous because of it. So I think, you know, attending the tennis match, I think, is great for tennis to have the president in the final.

Alcaraz will dethrone Sinner from the top of the rankings if the latter fails to defend his title. Sinner is aiming to become the first man since Roger Federer to defend the US Open title. Federer won back-to-back titles here from 2004 to 2008. If Sinner wins, he will become only the second man after the Swiss maestro to win both the hard court Majors in consecutive years.

Carlos Alcaraz on reaching a final without dropping a set

For the first time in his career, Carlos Alcaraz has reached a Grand Slam final without dropping a set. He has silenced those who used to call him an inconsistent player.

Even Alcaraz used to admit that he suffers from a dip in concentration levels during matches. At the press conference after his latest win, the five-time Grand Slam champion said one of his goals is also to be an efficient player.

Well, for me it’s great. It’s something that I’m working on, and just the consistency, you know, on the matches in the tournaments. In general, just not having up-and-downs in the matches; just the level that I start the match, just want to keep that level really high during the whole match.

If Alcaraz secures the win in straight sets against Jannik Sinner, he will become the first man in the Open Era to take home the US Open trophy without dropping a set. Alcaraz dropped a combined five sets against the World No.1 in the French Open and Wimbledon finals.

The most successful men’s player on the tour this season, Alcaraz, will be playing his ninth final and will bid for his seventh title. The couple of defeats he suffered were to Holger Rune in the Barcelona Open final and to Sinner in the Wimbledon final.

Alcaraz is also aiming to become a double Grand Slam champion in consecutive seasons. Last year, he completed the Channel Slam.
