Jessica Pegula is “obsessed” with Carlos Alcaraz‘s changing looks. At the Shanghai Masters, the seven-time Grand Slam champion showed off his thick, flowing locks and also debuted a mustache, to the surprise of the tennis world.
Tennis fans always eagerly await Alcaraz’s looks, especially his hairstyles. He sported a buzz cut at the US Open last year, then dyed his hair blonde. While he was sitting out on the sidelines due to his wrist injury this year, the Spaniard debuted cornrows.
Although Alcaraz lost to Zizou Bergs in the second round, en route to which he complained a lot about the inconsistency of the balls, his hairstyle and his mustache were more talked about than his performance. And now, on The Player’s Box podcast, Pegula and her co-hosts discussed Alcaraz’s different looks.
He gives us a new look… every month. I am kind of obsessed. A moustache, though? Didn’t love the moustache. I love that he keeps giving us something new, though. I can appreciate it.
Jessica Pegula said
Co-host Desirae Krawczyk compared his look to Pedro Sanchez, Efren Ramirez’s character in the 2004 film Napoleon Dynamite, while Jennifer Brady likened it to that of drug lord Pablo Escobar. Everyone was impressed by the volume of Alcaraz’s hair, with Brady remarking, “Yeah, he’s never gonna go bald.”
During the US Open, WTA World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka told Alcaraz that she is “jealous” of his hair as she doesn’t have “that much hair. So unfair!“
Alcaraz lost to Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals of the US Open and later competed at the Laver Cup. After helping Team Europe win the title, he defended his Japan Open title by beating Jiri Lehecka, before losing to Bergs in Shanghai.
Pegula was last seen in action in the opening round of the Wuhan Open. Jelena Ostapenko defeated her in three sets.
Daniil Medvedev on whether he can overtake Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz
Daniil Medvedev continued his winning ways in Almaty by defending his title, defeating Nikoloz Basilashvili. It was his fourth title in his fifth final of the season, after wins in Brisbane, Dubai, and Hangzhou. At a press conference in Almaty, Medvedev was asked whether he is now ready to challenge Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

But I always said, you know, probably you play a lot of matches against Alcaraz and Sinner, and you’re going to lose more than you win. And that’s normal, because they’re, like, in a good way, freaks. They know how to do stuff that other people don’t, but if you can win two out of 10, three out of 10, and then maybe four out of 10 or maybe five out of 10, you try. Every time you go out there, you try.
Daniil Medvedev said (H/T: Tennis365)
Medvedev trails 3-6 in the head-to-head matchups against Alcaraz. Against Sinner, he trails 7-10.
But again, when they’re healthy, they have proven it throughout the whole year that they are number one and number two in the world, in whichever order. It’s part of the game also to be healthy, and this year that was not the case.
Daniil Medvedev added
Medvedev will next be competing at the Vienna Open. He will lock horns with Daniel Merida Aguilar.
The win in Almaty boosted his chances of qualifying for the ATP Finals, which he won in 2020 by defeating Dominic Thiem. He also reached the final in 2021 but lost to Alexander Zverev. The year-ending championships kick off on November 15. Two-time defending champion Sinner won’t play as he has already ended his season.
