Carlos Alcaraz registered his third consecutive win over Jannik Sinner this season when he came out on top of the Italian in the final of the China Open on Wednesday (October 2). Inside the Diamond Court, with the scores leveled, it was difficult to guess who would claim the third set, which went into a tie-break.

Alcaraz was down 0-3 in the tie-break when he displayed his fighting spirit to bag seven straight points and eventually clinch victory 6(6)-7, 6-4, 7-6(3). After the win, Alcaraz said that quality matches like the final in Beijing are important for tennis.

Well, I’ll start saying that when Jannik and I face each other, I think it’s a really good thing for tennis because we always show a really intense match, really close match, great points, great rallies. I think for the people who don’t watch tennis, probably thanks to these kind of matches, they’ll start to watch tennis or even practice it.

Carlos Alcaraz said at the press conference

Alcaraz then added that matches against Sinner are never easy as he is one of the best tennis players in the world right now. The World No. 1 arrived in Beijing on the back of successful campaigns in the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open.

I’m proud of myself with everything I’ve done in the last month, working really hard physically, on the court as well. It has been an intense month. But really happy to end up with the trophy here in Beijing, with a really incredible match.

Carlos Alcaraz said at the press conference

After a long time, new champions other than a member of the Big 3 won all four Grand Slams. Jannik Sinner emerged victorious in the hard court Slams in Melbourne and New York, while Alcaraz clinched his first victory at the French Open, followed by his Wimbledon defense.

Alcaraz also denied Sinner his seventh win by clinching his fourth trophy on the ATP Tour this season, to go with the singles silver medal he won at the Paris Olympics. Both Alcaraz and Sinner will now shift their focus to the ATP 1000 Masters event in Shanghai. Alcaraz will kick-start his campaign against Shang Juncheng, while Sinner will be locking horns with Taro Daniel.
