Carlos Alcaraz has had an excellent clay season, winning the Masters 1000 titles in Monte Carlo and Rome, and had an extraordinary title defense at Roland Garros. The 22-year-old now boasts five Grand Slam titles and will be looking to defend his Wimbledon title next.

Alcaraz will commence his grass season with the Queen’s Club Championships. At a press conference before the start of the tournament, he spoke about the level of tennis he achieved in the Roland Garros final:

Honestly, I don’t think I can raise the level I showed in that final. We both played at a spectacular level, and it’s the best match I’ve ever played in my entire career.

That final will be remembered as one of the greatest Grand Slam finals. It was an epic five-set battle between World No. 1 Jannik Sinner and World No. 2 Alcaraz who met for the first time in a Grand Slam final. Clocking 5 hours and 29 minutes, it marked the second longest Grand Slam final in history and the longest in the history of the tournament.

Carlos Alcaraz is still in shock over the three championship points he saved

Carlos Alcaraz showed great fighting spirit as he won a five-set match for the first time after dropping the first two sets. Moreover, it was how the Spaniard saved three championship points in the fourth set, trailing 5-3 which made the match surreal.

I still look at my phone, the press, and the videos of the match against Sinner and how I managed to save the match points against him, and the truth is that I still don’t understand how I was able to win. I’m still in shock when I realize what I did, I’m not fully aware that I’m the Roland Garros champion.

In the press conference, Alcaraz admitted that he is still in shock sometimes and it’s difficult for him to realize that he won the French Open in that position. Alcaraz extended his 100% winning rate at Grand Slam finals with this victory.

Carlos Alcaraz will compete at Queen’s and Wimbledon in the grass season

After his ritualistic post-Roland Garros party in Ibiza, Carlos Alcaraz is back to the court and will face compatriot Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in his opening round at Queen’s. Alcaraz was the champion at Queen’s in 2023 where he defeated Alex de Minaur in straight sets in the final.

Alcaraz, however, lost to Jack Draper in the Round of 16 last year. World No. 6 Draper, who has reached two Masters 1000 finals this year, winning one of them, will be a formidable opponent on grass. The British No. 1 will face Jenson Brooksby in his opening round at Queen’s. Last year’s champion Tommy Paul has withdrawn from Queen’s this year due to injury.

The Queen’s just wrapped up with the WTA event which had returned after 52 years. The women’s event witnessed a stunning performance by qualifier Tatjana Maria who defeated several higher ranked players like Elena Rybakina and Madison Keys on her way to the biggest title win of her career. The 37-year-old became the oldest woman to win a title since Serena Williams in 2020.

Later in the grass season, Alcaraz will be eyeing a three-peat at Wimbledon. Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are the only men in the Open Era so far to win three consecutive titles at Wimbledon. Alcaraz had defeated Djokovic in finals of the previous two editions of the tournament.
