In Short
  • Carlos Alcaraz expressed regret over his "want to go home" comments during a Miami Open match.
  • His coach criticized the outburst as it reveals weaknesses to opponents.
  • Alcaraz is set to defend his title at the Monte Carlo Masters after a challenging tournament run.

During his third-round match against Sebastian Korda at the Miami Open, Carlos Alcaraz told his coaching team in the second set, “I can’t take it anymore, I want to go home now”. His coach, Samuel Lopez, in an interview, said he disapproved of Alcaraz’s outburst because it’s disadvantageous for him if he shows his weaknesses in front of his opponents.

Alcaraz, after his defeat, admitted during the press conference that he wanted to take a break to recharge his batteries. The 22-year-old is all set to start his campaign for the Monte Carlo Masters, and ahead of the tournament, he said at the press conference that he regrets making those comments.

Obviously, there are things I regret saying during the match, and that’s one of them. In the end, when things aren’t going well, when you try, and it doesn’t work out, there comes a point where you’re not thinking clearly, and you blurt out something that you really shouldn’t have.

Alcaraz has been playing non-stop tennis since the Australian Open. After winning the title in the Major by defeating Novak Djokovic, he clinched his maiden Qatar Open trophy by beating Arthur Fils. Before his second consecutive Miami Open early-round exit, the Spaniard suffered a semifinal defeat at the hands of eventual runner-up Daniil Medvedev in the Indian Wells Masters.

Alcaraz will be playing the Monte-Carlo Masters as the defending champion. Last year, he lifted his maiden title in the tournament with a three-set victory over Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti, winning his career’s third Masters 1000 title on clay.

Later, after skipping the Madrid Open due to an injury, he went on to lift the Italian Open and the French Open by defeating his arch-rival Jannik Sinner. He also made the final of the Barcelona Open, losing the match to Holger Rune. Because of his performances on the clay swing last year, the two-time Roland Garros champion has 4,300 points to defend.

Juan Carlos Ferrero names the players who can trouble Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner

Juan Carlos Ferrero recently sat for an interview with Marca, and there, among other things, he was asked about which player can challenge the Jannik Sinner-Carlos Alcaraz duopoly. Alcaraz’s former coach was told about Rafael Nadal‘s uncle Toni Nadal‘s remarks that Sincaraz are a cut above the rest.

I’d say there’s a slight difference, but not that much. In the end, [Alexander] Zverev has shown he’s close; perhaps an inspired [Taylor] Fritz; Djokovic is always a force to be reckoned with. They’re players who can give Carlos and Jannik trouble. It’s true that if they’re both at their best, they’re superior to the rest, but there are rivals who can seriously challenge them.

It was Djokovic who downed Sinner in five sets in the semifinals of this year’s Australian Open before his eventual defeat to Alcaraz in the final. This year, while Sascha, Fritz, and Djokovic have yet to win a title, Alcaraz and Sinner have won two each already.

Sinner beat Daniil Medvedev in the Indian Wells Masters final to win his first title in the tournament. Jiri Lehecka lost to the four-time Grand Slam champion in the Miami Open final, and this made Sinner the eighth man to complete the Sunshine Double.

In Monte Carlo, Sinner is a two-time semifinalist, skipping the tournament last year due to his doping ban. If the 24-year-old, who has so far won just one clay-court title, clinches the trophy in The Principality, he will dethrone Alcaraz from the top of the rankings. That lone clay-court title that Sinner lifted was at the 2022 Croatian Open. Alcaraz is the winner of 11 titles on the surface.
