Carlos Alcaraz lost to Jannik Sinner 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 in the finals of the inaugural Six Kings Slam held in Saudi Arabia. The Spaniard suffered defeat against the World No.1 for the first time in 2024, after having a three-match winning streak against him earlier this year.
Despite the loss, Alcaraz will be taking home a substantial prize. He earned 1.5 million dollars at the Six Kings Slam, which is the prize money for every player except the winner.
Sinner’s victory over Alcaraz at the Six Kings Slam won’t count toward their official head-to-head record since it was an exhibition event and not part of the ATP calendar. The tournament was primarily intended to promote tennis in Saudi Arabia, a growing trend across various sports in the country.
Before this event, Alcaraz had already experienced playing in Riyadh. In early 2024, the former World No.1 faced Novak Djokovic in an exhibition match, winning 6-4, 6-4 against the Serb.
Carlos Alcaraz’s memorable week in Saudi Arabia
Despite losing to Jannik Sinner in the final of the Six Kings Slam, Carlos Alcaraz will leave Saudi Arabia with many golden memories. The fact that the tournament organizers selected the Spaniard as one of the six tennis stars to promote tennis in the Middle East is a massive accomplishment for the four-time Grand Slam champion.
Alcaraz had to play in the quarterfinals of the Six Kings Slam, unlike Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, who received direct entry to the semifinals. The World No.2 defeated Holger Rune to set up an emotional semifinal against his idol and Olympic doubles partner, Nadal.
Alcaraz beat Nadal 6-3, 6-3 in what was their final match against each other. After the match, the duo exchanged heartwarming words about each other’s careers. Both Spaniards will look forward to representing their national team in the Davis Cup later this year, which will also be Nadal’s final ATP event.
In the final, Alcaraz lost to Sinner. Having qualified for the ATP World Tour Finals, it remains to be seen how much of a break he will take in order to be match-ready and compete for his first World Tour Finals title in November.
