World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz has credited Italian tennis for its recent surge. Italian tennis is currently at the peak of its powers, with strong performances coming from both the WTA and ATP circuits.

In the ATP circuit, Jannik Sinner is playing exceptionally well and is currently ranked World No. 1. He has won three Grand Slam titles since 2024 and secured back-to-back Davis Cups. Meanwhile, Jasmine Paolini has reached the Grand Slam finals at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

It’s something that doesn’t surprise me at all. They deserve it. They are doing a great job throughout the country: they have representatives in doubles, singles, WTA… they are doing great work, and it doesn’t surprise me. They deserve to have so many players in the top 100.

Carlos Alcaraz said in the post-match press conference (H/T: Punto de Break)

Sinner is not the only Italian male player making an impact in the tennis world. Matteo Berrettini returned to the ATP Tour last year and played a key role in securing the Davis Cup for Italy.

Lorenzo Musetti is another rising star. He reached his first Grand Slam semifinal at Wimbledon last year and later won an Olympic bronze medal.

Earlier in the tournament, Alcaraz had a tough match against Botic van de Zandschulp. He lost one set in his debut match in Rotterdam. In the next round, he easily defeated Andrea Vavassori, losing only three games.

The 21-year-old showed great skill in his match against Martinez. The game lasted 71 minutes. He hit 17 winners in the first set and did not face a break point. His power kept Martinez on the move throughout the match.

Alcaraz has now won 12 matches in a row against countrymen. He is the fourth Spanish player to reach the semi-finals at this ATP 500 event. Next, he will face Polish player Hubert Hurkacz. Meanwhile, 27-year-old Martinez, who beat Roberto Bautista Agut and Holger Rune this week, is ranked No. 40.
