Carlos Alcaraz ended his Cincinnati Masters campaign with the title. But he didn’t have to toil much in the final because his opponent, Jannik Sinner, was ill, and eventually handed Alcaraz the walkover.
The final was held on Monday afternoon. On Tuesday, he is scheduled to play the US Open mixed doubles with Emma Raducanu. His participation at the US Open mixed doubles was uncertain because of the schedule, but the Spaniard, at the press conference after his Cincinnati Masters win, has made it quite clear that he will be playing with the Brit. They will lock horns with the first seeds Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper.
I think it is good. I mean the scheduling, it is not the best to be honest, playing tomorrow. But you know about the concept of the tournament, about the mixed doubles, I just loved it. I think it is going to be new for me, which I love, and I’m going to have so much fun playing there, playing with Emma. It’s going to be tough, you know, against Draper and Pegula. But I will try to enjoy as much as I can. I will try to see how it’s going to be in the court, the balls, everything. I will treat it really important…and a good preparation for me.
Both Raducanu and Alcaraz have never played mixed doubles in Grand Slam events. At the US Open, both youngsters have won a title. Raducanu was the champion in 2021, while Alcaraz lifted his in the following year. While Alcaraz went on to win four more Majors, Raducanu has not yet reached a final since that fairytale run.
Jannik Sinner is positive about his Cincinnati Open campaign despite his defeat to Carlos Alcaraz
Had Jannik Sinner lifted the Cincinnati Open, it would have been his fifth Masters 1000 title as well as his first back-to-back victories in a tournament of this category. Sinner would have also become the first man after Roger Federer (2014-2015) to win the Cincinnati title for the second time in a row. Although the illness spoiled his run, he is still positive about his performance.

Yeah, I feel like a very positive week. I mean, making finals of a Master’s event, it’s always an amazing achievement. I feel like in the season I’m playing, it’s…it’s an incredible season. So, we’ll keep going, keep pushing as I say. Now, I have already some points where I need to improve if I want to go far in the US Open. And it was a good test this week, trying to understand where my level is. My level is in a good spot, for sure, but in the other way, there’s still room to improve.
Jannik Sinner said during his on-court interview
Sinner now trails 5-9 in the head-to-head encounters with the 22-year-old. He has so far played five finals and lifted two titles- at the Australian Open by beating Alexander Zverev and at Wimbledon by beating Acaraz.
In the US Open singles, Sinner will be aiming to defend his title. Last year, he breezed past home favorite Taylor Fritz to win his career’s second Grand Slam title.
Sinner could lose his No.1 ranking if Alcaraz wins a few more tournaments. At present, the 24-year-old has 11,480 points, while second-placed Alcaraz has 9,590 points. Alcaraz did not have many points to defend in Cincinnati as he had suffered an opening-round exit last year.
He also doesn’t have many points to defend at Flushing Meadows because he lost in the second round last year. Since Sinner and Alcaraz will be the first and second seeds in New York, respectively, they will only face each other if they both reach the final.
