Ahead of his opening match at the US Open, Carlos Alcaraz was asked about the topic almost everyone in the tennis fraternity has been talking about. His rival, Jannik Sinner, tested positive for a banned substance but faced no hardships from the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) as an independent tribunal cleared him of all charges within about four months.
This garnered criticism from all corners, with only a few coming forward to show their support for Sinner, as many felt there was a double standard by the ITIA. Alcaraz, who did not straightway say whether this is right or wrong, believes that the entire thing is complicated.
A really difficult moment for him. I'm not gonna lie, it is complicated. But obviously what I can say? I mean, in English it's going to be difficult for me to explain myself, but I try. Well, I believe in a clean sport.Carlos Alcaraz said at the press conference
Sinner was tested twice in March and, as per the ITIA, the substance, a banned steroid called clostebol, got into his body when his physiotherapist, who used a spray (bought from Italy) massaged Sinner. Alcaraz thinks there are a lot of things that people from outside don’t know.
The ITIA published Sinner’s report a day after he won his fifth title of the season at the Cincinnati Open. The 2024 Australian Open champion is in New York for the US Open and will lock horns with Mackenzie McDonald in the first round.
Carlos Alcaraz will be chasing his fifth Grand Slam trophy
Carlos Alcaraz, even though he did not have a great time on the court earlier this year, won two of his ATP trophies of the year in two Grand Slam events. He won his first French Open trophy with a five-set win over Alexander Zverev, before clinching his back-to-back trophies at Wimbledon with a straight-set win over Novak Djokovic.
After Wimbledon, Alcaraz made his Olympics debut in Paris and was the heavy favorite, but Djokovic, who was probably playing his last Olympics, emerged as victorious. The young Spaniard took home the silver medal.
Before winning two Grand Slam titles this year, Alcaraz won the 2022 US Open and the 2023 Wimbledon. At the US Open, he will be the third seed and will be bidding for his fifth Grand Slam title. The 21-year-old will lock horns with Li Tu in the first round, scheduled on August 27.
