Carlos Alcaraz has tipped Jannik Sinner as the best player of 2024 despite winning more Grand Slam titles than the Italian this year. The Spaniard made history on Sunday after beating former World No.1 Novak Djokovic to defend his Wimbledon title.
The 21-year-old has missed out on several tournaments this season due to injury but has come back stronger. He began the year exiting in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, a tournament in which Sinner picked his maiden career Grand Slam. The Italian soon overtook the Spaniard in the ATP rankings and won the Rotterdam Open and Miami Open.
Nonetheless, Alcaraz defended his Indian Wells Masters title in March but missed the Monte Carlo Masters due to a forearm injury. He fully recovered ahead of the Roland Garros and beat Jannik Sinner en route to the final to win his first French Open title. He consolidated his players among tennis big guys yesterday when he defended his Wimbledon title.
The Spaniard now has three titles, including two Majors, while Sinner has four titles including an Australian Open. Despite having a greater advantage of being the best player this season due to the number of major titles won, Alcaraz has tipped Sinner over himself.
For me personally, Sinner is the most consistent player. He has won a Grand Slam. He has reached, except in this tournament, the semi-finals in all the ones he has played in. He deserves to be in that position still. I have won big tournaments, let's hope that continues and we will see at the end of the year who is higher.Carlos Alcaraz said via ORM Deportes
Alcaraz is now undefeated in four Grand Slam finals. The Spaniard joined an elite group of men in the Open Era to achieve the ‘Channel Double’ by winning both Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same year. The other legends who have accomplished this feat are Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic.
