Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner to claim his fourth title of the season at the China Open. However, the Spaniard didn’t have enough time to celebrate the victory as he had to travel for the Shanghai Masters a few hours later. Now, he has voiced his concerns about the grueling tennis schedule.
Alcaraz has had a busy three months on the Tour. The Spaniard won his second consecutive Grand Slam at Wimbledon but didn’t have much time to rest as he had to compete at the Paris Olympics. He had to settle for the singles silver medal after losing to Novak Djokovic in the Summer Olympics.
The 21-year-old competed in the North American hard court and, despite his early exit, went on to represent Spain at the Davis Cup. He also played an integral role in Team Europe clinching its fifth Laver Cup. At the China Open, he had to play four matches before the final. Against Sinner in the final, the Spaniard needed three hours and twenty-one minutes to beat the Italian.
Alcaraz had just a few hours rest and rushed out straight from the stadium to catch a flight to the ongoing Rolex Shanghai Masters. He admitted that the tennis schedule has been very difficult.
Alcaraz has performed excellently since the North American swing where he won just one match in two tournaments. He only dropped one set in Beijing and will be looking forward to continuing the same form in Shanghai.
Carlos Alcaraz focused on winning his opening match against Shang Juncheng at the Shanghai Masters
Carlos Alcaraz will Open his Rolex Shanghai Masters campaign on Saturday (October 5) against Chinese Shang Juncheng. Juncheng became the second player from China to win the ATP Tour singles title, after his triumph at the Chengdu Open last month.
On paper, Alcaraz is favorite to beat the Chinese. However, the Spaniard will not want to get caught unaware against Juncheng. He revealed that he would approach the match the same way he has done for previous matches this year.
Alcaraz is eyeing the Shanghai Masters after his China Open victory. The Spaniard exited in the Round of 16 of the 2023 edition after losing to Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.
