Carlos Alcaraz put on two remarkable performances on Sunday in Berlin, leading Team Europe to a 13-11 comeback victory at the Laver Cup. The No. 3 player in the world secured the win by defeating Taylor Fritz 6-2, 7-5 in a crucial singles match.
Team Europe were 4-8 in the overall scoreline before Day 3 began and they were on the ropes when Ben Shelton beat Daniil Medvedev. However, Alexander Zverev’s win over Frances Tiafoe gave the Europeans hope before Alcaraz did the rest.
Alcaraz’s strong serving was a major factor, as he won 80% of points on his first serve. Although the former World No.1 briefly lost a break advantage in the second set, Alcaraz stayed focused. He broke Fritz again in the 11th game with sharp returns.
Alcaraz then confidently served out the match, sealing the win for his team. It was a memorable moment for Team Europe in a closely contested event.
Carlos Alcaraz adds Laver Cup to his historic 2024 season
World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz has added the Laver Cup to his historic 2024 campaign. The Spaniard beat Taylor Fritz in two sets to secure Team Europe’s fifth Laver Cup title overall.
It was another heartbreaking moment for Fritz, who recently lost the US Open final to Jannik Sinner. The American mentioned in an interview that he struggled to get over that loss, and this defeat at the Laver Cup won’t help his mental health.
For Alcaraz, this victory adds to his impressive season. The former World No. 1 had his best Grand Slam season, winning two of the four major titles this year—Roland Garros and Wimbledon—before settling for the Olympic silver medal in Paris.
Although Alcaraz experienced a slump in the autumn season, he seems to be regaining form after his Davis Cup duties in Valencia. With the Laver Cup win, he now heads to the Shanghai Masters in high spirits.
