The 2025 Canadian Open is facing another setback as Carlos Alcaraz is reportedly set to withdraw from the tournament. This comes after the confirmed absences of Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, and Jack Draper. The loss of these top players is a significant blow to the Masters 1000 event in Toronto, which runs from July 27 to August 7.
Despite these reports, Alcaraz’s agent, Albert Molina, denied the withdrawal rumors in an interview with DAZN. He stated that the Spanish star had not made an official decision. This has created confusion about whether Alcaraz will compete or join the list of notable absentees.
He (Carlos Alcaraz) is even considering returning to Toronto; we haven’t decided yet.
Albert Molina said on DAZN
Alcaraz recently lost to Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final. The four-set defeat ended his impressive 24-match winning streak. While the result was disappointing, the world No 2 remains a strong contender as the hard-court season begins.

The five-time Grand Slam champion is expected to return at the Cincinnati Masters starting August 8. He also missed the 2024 edition of the Canadian Open, which followed the Paris Olympics. His current break seems to follow a similar pattern.
How will World No.1 race be affected after the withdrawals
The Canadian Open, the first Masters 1000 event of the summer hard-court season, will go ahead without the world’s top two players. Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have both withdrawn, just weeks after meeting in the Wimbledon final. Sinner’s withdrawal was announced on Sunday, with Alcaraz’s absence reported shortly after. Their decisions follow similar withdrawals from Novak Djokovic and Jack Draper.

Sinner recently overtook Alcaraz in the ATP Rankings after winning Wimbledon. He now holds 12,030 points, while Alcaraz, after losing in the final and dropping 700 points, sits at 8,600. Although the Spaniard remains comfortably ahead of world No 3 Alexander Zverev, he now trails Sinner by 3,430 points. Alcaraz’s ranking won’t change after skipping Toronto, as he also missed it in 2024.
Sinner, on the other hand, will lose 200 points after missing the event where he reached the quarter-finals last year. Even with that deduction, he’ll remain on 11,830 points and keep a 3,230-point lead over Alcaraz. His strong showing in recent months, especially at Wimbledon, has cemented his position at the top of the rankings for now.
In the race for year-end No 1, Sinner remains in contention despite missing time earlier in the season. Alcaraz leads the ATP Race to Turin with 7,540 points, while Sinner is close behind with 6,000 points from just five tournaments. Historically, Sinner performs well in the post-Wimbledon stretch, having won key titles in 2024. If that trend continues, he could be on track to end the year as world No 1.
Novak Djokovic sparks injury concern after Canadian Masters withdrawal
Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, and Jack Draper have all withdrawn from the upcoming Canadian Masters, raising concerns about their fitness. This tournament, the sixth Masters 1000 event of the season, often sees players pull out due to its timing shortly after Wimbledon. However, the absence of these top names is still a major setback for organizers.

The format of both the Canadian and Cincinnati Masters has changed, now running over two weeks with players getting a day off between matches. Although this new structure offers more recovery time, the expanded draw adds a different kind of physical demand, potentially complicating players’ schedules.
Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam winner, recently lost in straight sets to Sinner in the Wimbledon semi-finals. He appeared physically limited during that match and had previously taken a fall against Flavio Cobolli, which seemed to affect his hip or upper leg. Djokovic has not played in the Canadian event since 2018.
Sinner, fresh off his first Wimbledon title, has also decided not to participate. Despite showing excellent form, he dealt with elbow discomfort during the later stages at Wimbledon. He wore an arm sleeve during his last few matches and has opted for rest over defending his 2023 title in Canada.
