Tragedy befell iconic Spanish shuttler Carolina Marin once again as, 11 points from the finish line to what would have been a remarkable appearance in the grand finale of the latest edition of the Summer Games, her chances went up in smoke with an unfortunate injury that forced her to forfeit the match to China’s He Bingjao.
Carolina Marin snatched the opening game comfortably by a staggering 21-14 and was well en route to the summit clash until her unfortunate landing on her surgically fabricated knee and immediately she hollered out in unbearable agony.
With silence prevailing in the La Chapelle Arena, her team immediately rushed out to her aid. With the packed house hollering for her, she did go back to the bench and tried putting the brace in order to continue the fight. However, even after resumption, she was barely yanking herself through the two points which was being played and eventually decided to call it a day after knowing the dreaded obvious.
What followed suit was uncontrollable sobs from the Spanish stalwart, hammering the court in utter frustration and tragedy after coming so close to history. Such was the heartbreak that before leaving the court, she didn’t even talk to the media on her trail.
Here’s what PV Sindhu had to say to Carolina Marin after her unfortunate exit
Marin, who was the gold medalist in the 2016 Rio games defeating India’s PV Sindhu in a closely contested finale, was leading the second set by 10-6. Even after the injury, she decided to battle on, watching Bingjao garner two more points as she wafted in pain.
Seeing what went down, her rival on the court while being the fierce supporter off it, PV Sindhu took to Instagram to write a special message for Marin.
To one of my greatest rivals and dearest friends on the tour, Carolina Marin, I am sending all the positive energy in the world your way. You were playing a phenomenal match, and I was deeply rooting for you! Deep down, I believe there was no player on tour I hated playing against more than you. Your willpower, sheer determination, and uncanny ability to put players under pressure are unmatched. Knowing you and your willpower, it’s only a matter of time, buddy! Just know I will always be your biggest supporter.PV Sindhu wrote on her Instagram

She almost fell short of any momentum whatsoever in the second as she was sent crashing into a spiral with the scoreline reading 21-14 against her.
