Former World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki hopes to see her long-term rival Serena Williams in New York after advancing to the Round of 16 at the US Open. The Danish player defeated French qualifier Jessika Ponchet 6-3, 6-2 on Grandstand.

In her post-match interview, Wozniacki expressed her delight at Williams’ return to the US Open. The American tennis great made her first appearance at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center since retiring after the 2022 edition.

Although Williams didn’t watch Wozniacki’s match, she was seen at Arthur Ashe Stadium supporting Jannik Sinner in his win against Christopher O’Connell. The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion has remained active in supporting tour-level players despite her retirement.

Wozniacki and Williams have had a lopsided rivalry, with the American holding a 10-1 advantage. The Danish player’s only win against the 42-year-old came in the 2012 Miami Open final (then called the Sony Ericsson Open).

Caroline Wozniacki humbles Jessika Ponchet to reach the US Open fourth round

Two-time US Open runner-up Caroline Wozniacki won her match against French qualifier Jessika Ponchet with scores of 6-3, 6-2. This victory moves the 34-year-old into her second successive Round of 16. She will face either Anna Kalinskaya or Beatriz Haddad Maia next, who will play later today (August 31).

This win marks Wozniacki’s third consecutive victory in her comeback, with two of those wins occurring in New York. Last year, she also reached the Round of 16 and pushed Coco Gauff, the eventual champion, to three sets.

With this victory, Wozniacki now has 129 Grand Slam match wins. This number places her second among active players, behind Victoria Azarenka, who has 163. It is the former World No.1’s 23rd time reaching the fourth round of a major tournament and her eighth time at the US Open.

Ponchet, ranked No.128 and 27 years old, had never won a Grand Slam match before this tournament. She secured her spot in the third round after defeating Zheng Saisai and benefitted from the withdrawal of No.4-seeded Elena Rybakina.
