- Caroline Wozniacki overcame severe cramps to win a round-robin match against Vera Zvonareva at the 2009 WTA Championships.
- Wozniacki later shared her experience on social media, reflecting on the pain she endured during the match.
- She returned to professional tennis in 2023 after retiring in 2020, recently competing in the US Open.
Caroline Wozniacki dealt with excruciating pain during a round-robin match at the 2009 WTA Championships, which she played against Vera Zvonareva. In the middle of the match, she suffered severe cramps and had no choice but to retire or continue playing.
The former World No.1 chose the second option. In a video that resurfaced online, Wozniacki collapsed on the court and started shaking badly. Somehow, she got up, and she continued playing while also crying with pain. And with a 6-0, 6-7, 6-4 win, she secured a spot in the semifinals.
When the 2018 Australian Open champion came across the clip that has now been viewed over 2 million times, Wozniacki wrote that she entered the match with a left hamstring strain.
This was me! Came in to the match with a left hamstring strain, over compensated for it with the rest of the body, it was a long match in very humid conditions, and I ended up in a full body cramp, but somehow found a way to win the match! Crazy to watch it back!

In the semifinal, Wozniacki was forced to give a walkover to eventual champion Serena Williams. It was the first time she secured a spot in the season-ending championships.
The following season, Wozniacki progressed to the final but failed to defeat Kim Clijsters. Wozniacki made four more appearances in the tournament and finally tasted victory in 2017 by defeating seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams. The last time she qualified for the event was in 2018, but failed to advance to the semifinals.

Williams and Wozniacki met 11 times in their career, with the latter emerging as the winner only once. That lone win came in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Miami Open.
The last time they faced each other was in the semifinals of the 2014 WTA Finals. After defeating Wozniacki, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion went past Simona Halep to claim her third consecutive and fifth overall WTA Finals title.
Wozniacki, the winner of 30 singles titles, hung up her racket following the 2020 Australian Open. But she returned to the tour in 2023 and played the Canadian Open. The 35-year-old was last seen in action in the fourth round of the US Open, where Beatriz Haddad Maia knocked her out with a three-set win. Wozniacki then took a break in 2025 as she was expecting her third child (she gave birth in July).
Williams, on the other hand, called time on her career at the 2022 US Open. Because she entered the drug testing pool of the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) last year, it sparked rumors of a possible comeback.
Many from the tennis community believe that Williams would make her comeback at Wimbledon and would play doubles alongside her sister, Venus Williams. Venus, the 45-year-old, has already played seven tournaments this season.
She was last seen in action at the Madrid Open, where she suffered a seventh consecutive defeat in the first round, this time at the hands of Kaitlin Quevedo. Venus made her comeback after a long injury hiatus at the Citi Open last year and had clinched her first-round win over Peyton Stearns.
