In Short
  • Rafael Nadal attended the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix but expressed no interest in pursuing motorsports.
  • He admires the bravery of F1 drivers but feels he lacks the necessary courage for racing.
  • Nadal's uncle, Miguel, noted that Rafael faced tougher competition in his era compared to Carlos Alcaraz's current landscape.

Rafael Nadal was one of the big names from the sporting world who attended the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix. Mercedes’ 19-year-old driver Kimi Antonelli beat Lando Norris to complete a hat-trick.

Nadal, who hung up his racket at the 2024 Davis Cup, now has more time on his hands to attend other sporting events, such as the F1 race in Miami, held at the famous Hard Rock Stadium, also the home of the Miami Open, where the Spaniard reached five finals, losing all.

Nadal waved the checkered flag at the end of the race. He also spoke with the drivers competing in the event, including compatriots Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso. Before the race, Nadal spoke to DAZN, during which he called tennis and F1 two “completely different” worlds.

The entire team you need to manage around you to make things run perfectly is a responsibility, and they’ve been doing it for many years. Fernando, obviously, and Carlos have also been there for many years.

Rafael Nadal said

Nadal, the winner of 22 Grand Slam titles, is not tempted to try his hand at motorsports.

The truth is, it doesn’t tempt me. On the track, I was more or less brave some days, but off it, I’m not brave enough. These guys are animals. I have the utmost admiration for what they do, their starts, their moments of pressure. In the end, they’re going over 300 kilometers per hour, just centimeters away from each other. You have to have things that I don’t have.

Rafael Nadal added

Nadal did not play at the Miami Open since it was moved to the Hard Rock Stadium. The last time he played in Miami was in 2017 and reached the final, losing the title to Roger Federer.

Miguel Nadal thinks Rafael Nadal faced more competition compared to Carlos Alcaraz

During his interview with BetBrothers, Rafael Nadal‘s uncle, Miguel Nadal, compared the level of competition between Carlos Alcaraz and his nephew’s time. As per Miguel, the 14-time French Open champion had it tough because the only player who is challenging the World No.2 is Jannik Sinner.

In Rafael’s time, there were Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Alexander Zverev, Juan Martin Del Potro, and David Ferrer. With all those players, you could face them in the quarter-finals or even the first round, and they could eliminate you. Today, in Alcaraz’s case, there is a big difference. I don’t see a wide group of players who have options to win a Grand Slam.

Alcaraz was last seen in action in the first round of the Barcelona Open. Because of a wrist injury, he was forced to hand the walkover to his second-round opponent, Tomas Machac.

The seven-time Major champion was forced to skip the Madrid Open, and he will also not be defending his titles at the Italian Open and the French Open. Last year in Rome and Paris, Alcaraz defeated Sinner.

The Italian will be chasing the Career Grand Slam at the French Open. From his comment after his Madrid Open win, one can only conclude that he will be competing in Rome to chase a historic sixth consecutive Masters 1000 title.

It was Alcaraz whom Sinner defeated to win his second clay-court title at the Monte-Carlo Masters. Sinner, after his defeat in Melbourne and Doha, became the eighth man to complete the Sunshine Double, and his win in Monte Carlo made him the second man after Djokovic to win the first four Masters 1000s of the season. His victory over Alexander Zverev in Madrid made him the first man to win five consecutive Masters 1000 titles.
