In Short
  • Kimi Antonelli won the Miami Grand Prix, dedicating his victory to tennis star Jannik Sinner.
  • Sinner became the first man to win five consecutive Masters 1000 titles and completed the Sunshine Double.
  • Both athletes achieved their victories on May 3, marking a significant day in their careers.

And it has happened once again! For the third time this year, tennis World No.1 Jannik Sinner and Formula 1 driver Kimi Antonelli won big titles in their respective sports on the same day.

On March 15, Sinner lifted his career’s first Indian Wells title, and on the same day, the 19-year-old won the Chinese Grand Prix. Then, on March 29, Sinner clinched the Miami trophy and completed the historic Sunshine Double, while Antonelli emerged victorious in Japan.

On May 3, Antonelli defeated reigning champion Lando Norris in the Miami Grand Prix, completing a hat-trick. Sinner, on the same day, dismantled Alexander Zverev in the Madrid Open final, registering his ninth consecutive win over the German. The Mercedes driver, after his win, dedicated his title to his compatriot. He told Sky Sports:

Jannik is doing great, too, so I dedicate this win not only to Alex [Zanardi] but also to Jannik, because he’s always been very kind to me. I am very happy we both are experiencing these beautiful moments.

Sinner has become the first man in history to win five consecutive Masters 1000 titles as well as the first four Masters 1000 of the season. He will next be playing at the Italian Open, where last year, Carlos Alcaraz defeated him in straight sets.

Because Sinner skipped the first four Masters 1000 of the season last year, he won 4,000 points after lifting these titles this year. He now sits at the top with 14,350 points, while World No.2 Alcaraz has 12,960 points.

Sinner, also the eighth man to complete the Sunshine Double, has 1,950 points to defend in Rome and Paris. The last time he suffered defeat in a Masters 1000 tournament was in last year’s Shanghai Masters third round, where cramps forced him to hand the walkover to Tallon Griekspoor.

Greg Rusedski says only Novak Djokovic can challenge Jannik Sinner at the Italian Open

Novak Djokovic has confirmed that he will be participating in the Italian Open. Last year, he skipped the tournament for the first time since making his main draw debut back in 2007.

Djokovic, the six-time champion in Rome, played the Geneva Open last year and ended his title drought by beating Hubert Hurkacz. The Serb wanted to play in Madrid as well, but he pulled out at the last moment, citing a physical problem.

The main draw of the Italian Open is set to start on May 6. Former player Greg Rusedski, during his Off Court with Greg podcast, said the only player who can challenge Sinner in Rome is Djokovic.

There’s one man who might be back this week… Novak Djokovic. We haven’t talked about him. We haven’t seen him, but he’s a guy who doesn’t discount himself from any event he plays. When Carlos is in town, it does make it more interesting, but come on, somebody’s gotta step up as well. It can’t just be one player. Zverev is the closest one to Sinner with his clay court results, but he’s been miles off him the last little while.

Sinner edges Nole 6-5 in the head-to-head matchups, losing their last meeting in the semifinal of this year’s Australian Open. After his shock five-set win over the World No.1, Djokovic reached his first Major final since the 2024 Wimbledon, only to lose in four sets to Alcaraz.

Sinner, who is now a nine-time Masters 1000 champion, also became the first player to complete the Sunshine Double without dropping a set. If he wins three more Masters 1000s, he will break Djokovic’s record of winning six Masters 1000s in a season. And if he wins in Rome, he will become only the second man after Nole to complete the Career Golden Masters.
