The 2024 season has been dominated by Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. Both players have established themselves in the Top 3 of the ATP rankings and have won eleven titles combined this year. But Casper Ruud believes only one of them can be hailed as the best player of the year.

Alcaraz and Sinner excelled in the Grand Slams this year, with both sharing two apiece. Sinner earned his first at the Australian Open in January before Alcaraz won his maiden French Open and defended his Wimbledon Championship. In brilliant fashion, Sinner claimed the US Open title after Alcaraz suffered a shocking early exit.

Sinner won the other five titles, including the three Masters 1000 titles. At the Rolex Shanghai Masters, he beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets to make it seven titles in total. Alcaraz bounced back from the New York disappointment to beat Sinner in three sets and win the China Open. However, Sinner was able to secure the year-end ATP No. 1 ranking.

During Ruud’s press conference at the ATP Finals in Turin, the Norwegian was asked to give his opinion about who was the best men’s player in 2024. He revealed that the two players deserve it but suggested that Sinner is a step ahead of Alcaraz this season.

He is deservedly the world No 1. He is definitely the player to beat this year. It seems like this guy almost forgot how to lose. It’s tough to play all the best players in the world, but it’s also nice because sometimes you feel like an underdog and you can play freely.

Alcaraz has exited the ATP Finals after winning just one of his three matches in the round-robin stage. He will go to represent his country at the Davis Cup Finals. Meanwhile, Sinner is in the semifinals of the tournament and is a strong favorite to win the title after winning all three group stage matches.

Sinner is the clear favorite to win over Ruud in their semifinal tie. The Italian holds a 2-0 head-to-head record against the 25-year-old. However, Ruud will be hoping to unexpectedly upset the World No. 1.
