‘The biggest thing keeping them apart is Jon is now a heavyweight and Adesanya is a middleweight’ – Chael Sonnen believes Jon Jones vs Israel Adesanya is not dead
Israel Adesanya suffered the first loss in his MMA career against Jan Blachowicz at the recently concluded UFC 259. The ‘Last Stylebender’s’ light-heavyweight debut didn’t go as planned as he was thoroughly outclassed by a powerful Jan Blachowicz. His loss in the division dominated by his nemesis, Jon Jones (now a heavyweight), gave rise to questions regarding the probability of the match happening (Adesanya vs Jones). With a lot of experts and fans writing it off, former UFC Fighter Chael Sonnen believes that the match is not dead.
Speaking in his own channel, Chael Sonnen revealed that one shouldn’t write off Adesanya vs Jones just because Adesanya lost to Blachowicz. He felt that two-weight divisions separating the pair, is the biggest problem, which is being a hindrance for the fight from taking place.
‘The biggest thing keeping them apart is not that Adesanya lost to Blachowicz‘ – Chael Sonnen
Chael Sonnen was quoted as saying, “Adesanya is completely right [about his fight with Jon, still alive], but there is still a way that you have to go about that. As Jon Jones is dismissing because you lost, and you are trying to get to Jon, even though you lost, there is just a little bit of a friction. However, Adesanya is the one that’s right and I’ve heard a lot of people say Adesanya versus Jones is dead.” [H/T FirstSportz]
He continued, “The biggest thing keeping them[Jon and Izzy] apart is not that Adesanya lost to Blachowicz, but it is – Jon is now a heavyweight and Adesanya is a middleweight. As I see it, it is the biggest problem!” [H/T FirstSportz]
Jon Jones is currently lined-up to make his heavyweight debut, possibly against the winner of the upcoming rematch between Stipe Miocic and Francis Ngannou. Adesanya, on the other hand, has expressed his desire to finish some unfinished business in the middleweight division.
