Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol go into action this evening, behind a top-stack card. However, the card, streaming on ESPN+ at 6:00 p.m. ET has had its share of early mishaps! Light heavyweight boxers Ben Whittaker and Liam Cameron fought earlier this evening, Live on DAZN. Unfortunately, when the two went over the top rope, the highly competitive match ended prematurely. The Olympic silver medalist Ben Whittaker suffered an injury, thus ending the bout from inside the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh.
From the start, the fight was a lot of fun. Whittaker was the quicker man, using his speed to jab and land quick combinations. Liam Cameron, however, understood the challenge and pressed forward, countering with stinging right hands. R2 – 3 saw the fight get ugly. Both men started to clinch and started to lump at each other. Unfortunately, the fight went off the rails in the fifth round as Cameron pinned Whittaker against the ropes!
The 2020 Olympic silver medalist boxer wanted to keep his winning momentum stretching. However, it ended rather unceremoniously. Both men went completely off the ring. The crash appeared to leave both men dazed. It was Whittaker who had trouble getting up and suffered what looked like a serious lower leg injury. There’s no telling how much hard the boxer would go on himself after the shortcoming. But it was something while it lasted.

There was some confusion as to whether the result was a “no contest” or a technical decision. Subsequently, it went to the cards and the judges scored the fight a draw. It seemed appropriate given how successful both men were early on. Until the split draw the cards were – 58-57 – Whittaker/ – 58-57 – Cameron/ and another – 58-58. As such, the matter has gone quite viral.
Fight fans react to Ben Whittaker’s boxing injury
Intentional or not, freak injuries in and outside the ring can always hamper combat sports athletes. However, it’s a whole other issue if it impedes a booking or camp, or a fight. Ex-WBC lineal heavyweight Tyson Fury got his undisputed showdown postponed not that many months back due to an injury.

However, an injury during a fight is a whole other thing. Ben Whittaker injured his right leg after falling out of the ring with Cameron in the fifth round. Whittaker, 27, was unable to continue the scrap, a light heavyweight action scheduled for ten rounds. Whittaker (8-0-1, 5 KOs) and Liam Cameron (23-6-1, 10 KOs) thus fought to a split draw for half the amount. Here are a few top reactions to it:

Ben Whittaker didn’t look himself today. Have to imagine there will be a rematch of this fight to settle whatever the result is, but definitely not the fight Whittaker had planned for today.

Liam was turning the fight around
Trip hazards are always a thing in the square ring. However, the timing of the injury, coming when Whittaker was at his worst, gave some fans the impression he was looking for a way out. To some, it looked as if Whittaker was giving up and using the injury as a way of avoiding defeat.
Liam Cameron was coming on from the third round, working well in pockets after all. Many fans have consequently voiced as such. However, others have hinted that there was still a lot of fight left in both of them. So hopefully a rematch can be set up when Whittaker has recovered. All in all, this trip hazard will be a tale for days.
