Charles Leclerc lost his chances of victory at the Azerbaijan GP despite securing the pole in Baku. The 26-year-old started the race at the front and was driving exceptionally well. However, Oscar Piastri who was just behind him saw the opportunity to overtake at lap 20 and passed him.
Piastri’s MCL38 appeared faster than Leclerc’s car, which helped him defend the Monàgasque until the end of the race. In a post-race interview, Charles Leclerc mentioned that his performance in the last couple of races had been quite good overall. However, the last weekend didn’t go as planned losing some points.
Leclerc pointed out that teammate Carlos Sainz was in a good position during the race but wasn’t able to finish due to the unfortunate crash in the end. This made the weekend even more disappointing for the team.
It’s been a pretty good last couple of races in terms of performance. This weekend hasn’t been great, because obviously we’ve got Carlos that was in a good position that didn’t manage to finish the race.Charles Leclerc said, as reported by Pitdebrief.com
Despite a weekend that didn’t go as planned, Leclerc emphasized that the team is in good position, which have brighten up their mood. He emphasized that they needed to keep pushing forward and continue working hard to improve in the upcoming races.
But within the team, we are in a good position, in a good mood, and we need to keep pushing in that direction.Charles Leclerc added
Ferrari is in a position where staying focused and positive will help them achieve their desired success.
Charles Leclerc labels the Azerbaijan GP as ‘pretty frustrating’ after losing it to McLaren
Charles Leclerc described the Azerbaijan GP as pretty frustrating as the teams used different setups for their cars. He mentioned how Oscar Piastri had a setup with less downforce, which made them faster in the straights, while he had more downforce and was quicker in the tighter, twisty sections of the track.
It’s been a pretty frustrating race. We ran two different configurations. Obviously, they had, I think, a lower downforce package. We had a bit more downforce, which made us quite quick in the castle section.Charles Leclerc explained (via Pitdebrief.com)
Leclerc certainly felt the difference in car setup impacted the race, with his car being better in certain areas but not as fast in others. Reflecting on the missed opportunity in Baku, the Monaci native stressed that Ferrari needs to make the most of every chance to earn points in Singapore.
