A sports reporter from Sports Illustrated caught Charvarius Ward‘s attention as the San Francisco 49ers’ cornerback didn’t hold back from calling him for spreading false information concerning his status in the regular season.
The incident occurred after the 49ers’ victory against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 8, where Ward had another underwhelming performance including a 19-yard pass interference penalty on 3rd and 10. SI journalist Grant Cohn shared a social media post on his official X handle updating the fans about the cornerback’s availability in future games of this season.
Without citing any source, Cohn tweeted that, “The 49ers just benched Charvarius Ward.” Unfortunately for him, it quickly grabbed the attention of Ward and he decided to call it out instead of ignoring the post.
I’ll never get benched lame a** dude.

While it remains a mystery which source told Cohn about Ward’s supposed benching, the defense player made it clear that the team isn’t thinking about putting him on the sidelines. He completed the game with 7 tackles, 5 of which were solo in the 58 tackles recorded by the Niners’ defense.
With a 30-24 victory on Sunday, the 49ers recovered from their disappointing loss against the two-time defending Super Bowl champions last week. They have now improved to a 4-4 season record before facing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 9.
Charvarius Ward’s future in question as 49ers eye potential trade
The post by the 49ers reporter came shortly after Ward’s trade rumors began because of his slow start this season. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported on Saturday that the 49ers are considering trading the Second-team All-Pro before the NFL Trade deadline of November 5.

In the wake of Brandon Aiyuk’s season-ending knee injury, fellow receiver Deebo Samuel is likely off the table. However, cornerback Charvarius Ward, a second-team All-Pro in 2023 who has had a rough start this season, has an expiring contract and might draw interest.

Part of the reason for trading the defensive standout could be his inability to match the standards of his lucrative deal signed with the team.
With that being said, if the rumors are true then any team acquiring the cornerback would be for a short-term asset as he is in the final year of his three-year contract with the 49ers worth $40.5 million contract.
