The NASCAR community over the moon with the new playoffs format change, as from the 2026 season the sport is going back to the chase format. 10 race shootouts between the best 16 drivers from the regular season will crown the champion. It makes the title more legitimate and brings authenticity back to the sport.
2020 Cup Series champion Chase Elliott shared his thoughts on the format change in a recent interview with Peter Stratta. He pointed out that drivers racing mentality won’t change with the new format. Races are the product of the strategy, which primary focusses on maximizing the points and that won’t change with the new format.
I think no different than it was before (racing mentality). We made decisions and strategy as it pertains to stage points and things of that nature based on what we had going on in the points.
Chase Elliott told Peter Stratta via YouTube.
Further talking about the point, the Hendrick Motorsports veteran pointed out that in the old format the win and in factor mattered late in the playoffs, with the new system that no longer won’t be the case. He also asserted that the same set of drivers that fought for the title over the last few years will be the front runner next year as well.
Certainly, as you got to the Round of 12 and the Round of eight, I don’t really see that being a whole lot. You’re just going to be making those decisions, not necessarily in the last two or three weeks. That’s when we’re going to start coming along… I think that’s the whole point of this deal is there’s enough time for it to sort itself out. And it’s going to be uh it’s going to be the same crowd it’s always been.
Chase Elliott added.

Joe Gibbs Racing driver Chase Briscoe also shared his thoughts on the format change like Chase Elliott. He pointed out that the new system in the perfect mixture if playoffs and full-season format. The most consistent drivers and the racers that can get hot at the right time can take advantage format the same time.

I’m excited… I think all the drivers for sure wanted it to be a real example of the body of work that you’ve done all season long. And I think that this format kind of hits all those things, and it’s kind of a perfect mixture of you get that 10 race playoffs where a guy can kind of get hot at the right time.
Chase Briscoe said.
Further talking about the point, the veteran pointed out that the new format gives NASCAR both the full-season points feel alongside the excitement of the 10 race playoffs. He seems to agree with Mark Martin that the new format is best decision that could have come out of the playoffs committee drama.
You still have the playoff feel, and then you still have kind of the season-long points because it is going to matter all season long where you’re running because of how the seedings work when the chase starts
Chase Briscoe added.
The comments from the two-star NASCAR drivers seems rational and on point. The new format is going to make the sport better for the drivers and fans. It would be interesting to see how everything is going to playout for the sport in the coming years.
