“It is in the eye of the beholder…” Chet Holmgren gets honest about ROTY challenge with Victor Wembanyama

Victor Wembanyama had a refined debut season, producing a work of art that the world had never seen before. His performance increases the likelihood that he will receive the ROTY (Rookie of the Year) title. However, Chet Holmgren is the only player who can truly challenge Wemby. When Holmgren was recently questioned about being the ROTY, Holmgren got honest about it.

In a recent interview, Rich Kleiman and Chet Holmgren talked about the ROTY. Kleiman questioned whether he still thought he should win the prize despite Victor Wembanyama‘s “staggering thing” in the episode. In response, the Thunder Star said that while he should win, it ultimately depends on beholders.

First of all credit to Wemby, and what he's doing. Having the argument of winning versus not winning versus sacrificing for the team versus someone having more opportunity versus what some might think higher level players on the team versus not. That doesn't discredit what he's doing and what I am doing. I think we both are having great years. The voting is in the eye of the beholder.

It is somewhat accurate to say that Holmgren plays for the team seeded first while Wemby is with the squad at the bottom; the 7-foot-4 player is the focal point of the San Antonio Spurs. However, given the quality of players surrounding him, Holmgren is kind of a second or third choice.

Victor Wembanyama has a chance to win both ROTY and DPOY

No player in the NBA has ever taken home the awards for both Rookie and Defensive Player of the Year. However, given his performance this season, Victor Wembanyama has a great opportunity to create history. Wemby will be packing up another large item from his closet: turning this opportunity into reality.

But it wouldn’t be so simple for him to reach this unrecognized achievement. Wemby had the best rookie season and despite having the advantage over ROTY, the position of his team in the table can certainly be a setback.

At this point, the only thing that could prove challenging for Wemby is to become DPOY. Rudy Gobert, is now leading but Wemby is probably the second player being considered for this title. Whether he wins both titles or not, he has undoubtedly captured the hearts of all and is sure to receive more honors shortly.
