Chris Jones has seen it all in his eight years playing in the NFL. Playoff disappointments, to not being considered one of the best defensive linemen in the league, to eventually being respected league-wide. Three Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs and a massive contract later, he has stayed grounded. However, he tried to do something with that money which has brought some backlash.

A 66-year-old woman named Vera Liddell will spend the next 9 years in prison. The charge was that she stole chicken wings. Where Chris Jones comes from is that he wrote this on his official X account after learning of the sentencing.

I’ll pay for the wings that she stole to get her free.

He probably wanted to use his money to do good. He was replying to the X post that said nothing other than the fact that she just stole the chicken. But she did not just steal it out of need, instead was the mastermind of a scheme.

From 2020 to 2022, Vera Liddell was the food service director for Harvey School District 152 in Chicago. According to WGN TV, she placed the order for chicken wings with Gordon Food Services, the main supplier to the district. An auditor uncovered the grand scheme when she found the district to be in the red on food bills.

Schools do not serve chicken wings to children because they have bones. After a thorough investigation, Liddell pled guilty and was sentenced. None of this information was mentioned in that X post. It might be why the leader in him probably felt bad for her. But fans felt it was naive.

Fans go after Chris Jones for not understanding the crime

Fans feel Chris Jones just reacted to a message without understanding the full scope of the crime. Had he known that Vera Liddell had carefully planned and executed the crime, he probably wouldn’t have thought of paying for her release. That too for stealing food meant for children in one of the most impoverished areas of Illinois, Chicago.

No wonder fans took to social media to call the 30-year-old out. Some felt he was standing with crime, whereas others felt he was just ignorant. Check out some of those reactions below;

Hopefully, next time Chris Jones comes across something on social media, he will take the time to research it. Else the Kansas City Chiefs star will end up with the same response from fans who want him to be a leader for the good. His focus is on Super Bowls, and being a community builder at the same time.
